Question How the heck do you start fixing Edmonton in FHM 8?

Given recent... events... I have decided to give it a go re-tooling the Oilers on the fly. But it seriously feels like such a challenging task: there is so much money tied up in bad players, little room to maneuver under the cap, and the few pieces that would bring back something in trades seem completely indispensable. I don't even know where to start!

Others who have had a go with Edmonton this year, any tips for where to start? Players that I should be trying to get rid of/bring in? Should I keep McDavid and Draisaitl on separate lines?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I am by no means a pro at FHM, and find these sorts of middling cases--where you can't really just go for it but shouldn't do a full rebuild--the hardest to deal with.

Unlike real life, you probably have time to draft, draft, draft! Keeping them McDavid and Draisaitl separated is probably for the best as well.

The biggest factor is two fold; getting a good reliable goaltender (and finding a better one - like targeting maybe one of Boston's) and basically putting the entire D-core on the trade block.

My opinion anyway.

Obviously, you need to get Evander Kane. If fans don’t like it, or the media doesn’t like it, or whatever... it is what it is.

No matter how much McDavid and Draisaitl score, it's pretty tough to win without a decent goaltender. I'd start there, and then hopefully get lucky with a piece or two off the waiver wire.

I'd try a minor retool:

I think it was a mistake to re-sign Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, though his contract is good value. I see him as a luxury player for the Oilers. He'd be the first player I'd try to move. Montreal could be a target - they need a center and have lots of interesting wingers. Toffoli, Hoffman, Anderson... even Drouin... would balance out the roster and give you the makings of two scoring lines.

Defence... Duncan Keith was a valiant attempt to add character and winning experience to the team. Might not mean much in the game. Darnell Nurse is about to be overpaid but he is a unique player and the Oilers certainly don't have anything like him in the pipeline. I think Evan Bouchard makes Tyson Barrie expendable. I'd be looking to move Barrie ASAP for a defenceman who can play defence. Not sure if Barrie would return much in reality. I suppose you could settle for trading Bouchard instead. The window is now for Draisaitl and McDavid.

I don't think settling for the Koskinen/Smith tandem was the blunder it's made out to be. Obviously it hasn't worked out, but it could in FHM (and there's still time for Koskinen to turn it around in real life). On paper, the Oilers are spending slightly more than the average team does on goaltending for two guys who are both capable of being average starters. You'd like to upgrade, but it's not priority number one.

I shouldn't laugh as much as I did at this.

Well, Aaron Dell is on waivers, so you may want to add him too for some extra physical toughness.

Nice idea if it works, but can you imagine the pitchforks and torches IRL?
