I just noticed the Al Cowens in the game is a wee bit off, to say the least.

Thanks for Hense, AESP_Pres!
Jim Saul would like a word with whomever said "being a catcher is the fastest way to the Major Leagues". It was a quick ticket to AAA, yes, but then he spent the entire decade of the 1960s stuck one step below. He was a Columbus Jet, an Atlanta Cracker, a Tulsa Oiler, a Portland Beaver, a (PCL) San Diego Padre, a Jacksonville Sun, a Padre again, a Hawai'i Islander, a Tacoma Cub, a Beaver again, an Islander once more, and a Cub again…but never in the show. (I grant you his bat work was mediocre in the extreme, but still. He was a left-handed hitter, and lefty-batting catchers are so prized some teams will do anything for them. *cough* drafting Steve Chilcott #1 overall, instead of Reggie Jackson *cough*. Not for Saul, though.) In the game, the Washington AI decided, for some unfathomable reason, that the Senators needed five catchers (Johnny Orsino, Paul Casanova, Doug Camilli, Mike Brumley, and Saul) in September to secure that first-division slot, so Jim got his shot. In OTL, after finally hanging up his spikes, Jim became a minor league manager and coach, putting in over 50 years in OB. And he finally got that major-league pension because he made friends with Jim Marshall at some point, and so got a slot on the staff when JIm had a manager job (Cubs in 1975-1976; A's in 1979). All I have for a pic in his playing days is a dark b/w (newspaper?) shot. But Topps did shoot him as a Cubs coach during spring training one year; perhaps that will help.

Jim Saul
On his 1973 baseball questionnaires, Jim Saul indicated that his greatest professional thrill was winning the 1961 International League Championship but what I cared about was that he said he also won the Virginia High School Championship in 1958 as that led me to his yearbook and his senior photo. As with any yearbook photo, it predates their minor league career but sometimes you work with what ya got... Did the best I could with it, Amazin'.

Thanks. You always rock those yearbook pics.
The Cubs are furiously hanging onto 8th place, trying to stay above the expansion squads, as opposed to OTL where they responded to Durocher's "This is NOT an eighth-place team!" declaration by placing 10th. This despite the fact that they haven't benefited from the Ferguson Jenkins trade, which not only deducts a HoFer from the rotation, but means Adolfo Phillips is still in Philadelphia ("Phillips of the Phillies"), too. Thus, "Leo" has turned to Donald Davis, formerly of Tulsa OK. Not a bad choice, since Donald IRL was putting up a .300/.413/.453 at Tacoma, his 4th season of AAA ball. He was primarily a 1B, but the AI rates him as mobile enough to cover the center garden. And thus he's managed to stay over .700 across 113 games. Nothing much for Wrigley Field, but at least he covers the spot. Certainly, Davis was fast enough to evade the cameras, or at least me. Any chance you can find a yearbook/newspaper article or whatever to work with? Thanks in advance. Last edited by Amazin69; 04-17-2023 at 02:07 PM. |

Not as good as I'd like... hard to find a picture with a good angle without a big smile (easier to find for his non facial hair days), but this is my result.

I have another option from my old database too... his mustache is more complete here, but I think he was with the Cards in the picture I have used.

Donald Davis
Amazin',
Donald Owen Davis, on his MLB questionnaire, indicated that as a member of the Class of '56 Tulsa, OK Central High baseball team, one of his favorite memories was making All-State and taking home the State Championship in '54. One of the pics is from ancestry, a family group shot. Did the best I could using his HS team photo as his senior picture got cut-off on the fold when it was scanned. Made the facegen. |

Awesome as always! Thanks!
So the Mets are a half-game up on Houston for 9th place, and Jerry Grote is doing his bit behind the plate. He's backed up by fellow ex-Astro Ron Brand, whom the Mets got in a spring training deal for the aged Roy McMillan. And for September, the 3rd catcher is Lloyd Flodin, up from AAA Jacksonville. IRL, this was Flodin's best season…but only for AA Williamsport. He did make the Mets Yearbook in 1964, though:

Also up from Jacksonville is infielder Jack Tracy. The All-American from Seton Hall played 3 seasons for the Suns in OTL, making two International League All-Star teams. After his playing days, he coached Seton Hall to the 1984 College World Series. (Pat Pacillo's glory days.)
![]() What Jack didn't get, of course, was a call-up. Had he made it to Shea, he would have been the first Met from Staten Island, a generation before John Franco. Despite this, he was inducted into the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. |

And yet another Jacksonville Sun rising over Flushing is 1964 "Rookie Star" (per Topps) Bill Haas, whom the game calls "William". IRL, Bill followed a decent 1965 at Buffalo by getting sent down to Williamsport, flopping hard and getting released. He never even saw the sun in the Sunshine state, much less Queens.
