Fictional leagues

Is there any way to create a fictional league using real MLB players? I tried set one up and have a draft, but it gave me all fictional players. Any help is appreciated.

I think the easiest way is to start a historical league using import real historical rookies and use random rookies from all eras. The problem is is that you have to use the league structure for the particular year you choose to start in. You also have to turn off the international amateurs free agents, international scouting discoveries, international established free agents and automatic creation of free agents.

This is an area that the devs seriously need to address. It is a pain trying to set up a fictional league with real players when you don't want to use the historical year league structure.

You don't have to use a historical, just create a custom game and still check historical rookies, while making sure the disable auto free agents is also checked. Then you should only get historical players.

I might be wrong but I think this should work.

Doesn't work. I tried it again thinking something may have changed. All the players are fictional players.

If you go the custom game route you still need to select historical and you are right back to having to use the league structure for the year you choose to start in.

Another suggestion is to go to the League Options and randomize the cities and team nicknames. The game will create the jerseys, caps and logos (I think). If this what you are looking for. The graphics section has ballcaps and jerseys for many fictional teams that you can choose from. You just have to download the files.

You can change the league structure, as long as you turn off the historical expansion feature.

My current random debut started in 1980. All fictional teams/nicknames. 12 teams in both AL and NL. Subleagues broken up into 3 divisions. I expanded in 1987 and now have the same structure used by the MLB in 1995,

It's not quite that simple. You have to start your league in a year that has the same number of teams you wish to use. Try starting a 1950 league and then adding teams. You end up with not enough players in the draft pool. I tried and that is what happened.

I like using 1950 settings but I like my league to be 2 subleagues with 3 or 4 divisions of 4 teams. That means I have to start a 1969 league and adjust my game settings to 1950 after league creation.

I am going to try the 1969 league with 1950 settings to see if I have better results. I will save it as a template if it works.

ETA. That didn't work. I tried a league with an inaugural draft and without a draft and ended up without enough players to fill MLB and MiLB with both setups.

I ended up with 26 players in MLB and 8 players in AAA. Zero in AA, A, Rookie.

The league structure I am trying to use is working through Custom Setup>Historical

MLB
2 Subleagues
3 Divisions in each subleague
4 Teams in each division

AAA
AA
A
Rookie

What am I doing wrong?

One thing you could do is start your random debut league in 1949. Set TCR to 0. And turn injuries off. Make sure you turn off historical expansion

Set the amateur draft to import enough players for at least 30 rounds. Fast sim the first season. Once the season ends and you reach the first day of the offseason expand your league by 8 teams. This will allow you to have the 3 divisions of 4 teams/24 teams total.

Fast sim to the start of preseason. Erase all history and schedule a fantasy draft. You should have enough players available in the draft for at least 47+ rounds. Turn injuries back on if you choose. Set TCR to desired setting. Make sure you import a schedule. Probably want to change the amateur draft settings as well, as I doubt you would want it to continue to bring in so many players.

You are now all set to play 1950 with enough players for every team to have 40+ players on the roster.

"Fictional" league wizard... select the real world mlb structure... that will have the 2021 players just as a quickstart. then, edit structure after game creation... the order in which you do that can save time. Maybe, delete some excess players too, if you don't have 30T ML level.

Can probably do some editing during game creation if you go into advanced mode after you add the mlb structure (in this case also includes real players.)

could do it per team, too... switch to add histiorical team mode, but you won't get the "2021 quicksart) mlb players. you'll get the "2020" players. their ratings will be different.

e.g.
when you delete a team, the players go into FA. So, delete the players while on the team if that is easier than trying to hand-select out of FA list.

Mass importing players is another option. Need playerid, year of import etc.. can make a simple comma delimted text file and use import feature in the game. you may want to get rid of fictional players first, then re-fill. think you can put them on teams by adding that to the txt file, but if not default will go to FA. check manual for advanced options.

depending on how much you need to change the structure, one may be faster than the other.

One league i am working on now is random debut 2000. I ran the draft. Then i set schedule to 0. Released all players and coaches. Set that teams can not make changes from the Team setup screen. Set players draft to 1 round and that they become FA. i then created a fictional league using most of Low's sets. So it's a mix of real and fictional. Still working on it. i have yet to test it.

So the plan is that the fictional league will draft fictional players in June and that in december 30 historical players will join the league as FA and can be signed by anyone.
