How can I fix this issue w/Using Openers?
hey guys
so im trying to use openers. my bullpen is dominant and my rotation is just okay so im using it to buoy the rotation. HOWEVER... i changed all the SP game strategy to "use as a follower" and I set specific bullpen guys (3 of them) as "openers" then, the first game of spring training (so no, the relievers weren't fatigued), it didn't work. it started by using my SP. I thought maybe I did something wrong so i double checked and did it again, and same result in game 2. then i went to the team strategy section and moved the slider over to always use opener, and then it just outright skipped my SPs at all from entering the game and ONLY used relievers then i slid the slider in the middle, and then it goes back to just ignoring my opener. i don't get it. help! |

Did you check your game setting to see if you are allowed to use openers.
Game>Game Settings>League Settings>Stats & AI tab Go to the General Strategic Tendencies section |

I don't know then. I can tell you that I use 7 day lineups set to no use of alternative lineups and tonight I went to play a game and the AI had changed my line up. Maybe the devs just haven't worked it out yet.

Generally speaking, if you keep your team slider in the middle, and have openers/followers set as desired, it should work. Although I would caution that since Spring is a very different time, you may not really see what's happening. Players get subbed in a little more randomly, everyone tends to pitch on strict limits, etc...

In my experience in spring training the openers strategy doesn't really work as intended, but if you use the same setting in the regular season it should be normal. Though idk if 3 openers for all your 5 starters would be optimal (no idea) since they could be used as relievers during the games

Yeah I rather obsessively love Spring Training in OOTP, and the AI seems to understand that the main goal is getting pitchers a few innings and limited pitches (at least in the beginning) in a pretty-much random order - all of which is fine. LOL the only “glitch” I experienced was of course my last Spring game goes well into extra innings, and neither team wants to waste their bullpen, with the regular season starting the next day. IRL the teams would have agreed to suspend and live with a tie. I had position players pitching for both teams for multiple innings. But no, I wouldn’t overhaul the game, just to allow a tie in Spring Training. And it’s a lovely boxscore.
