Merging Teams

I have a dominant super team. I am in a 34 team league, I am the only human manager. 16 AL 18 NL. I am thinking I could merge some of the teams. Would I just put all the players from one team into the other, and let the AI figure it out? What about the minors? Or is there a function? All leftover players would become free agents. Should I have a free agent draft, or just let teams sign free agents?
I will also only have 1 league (MLB) no AL or NL. My team would not merge with anyone, but I could get involved with free agency.

How many teams are you thinking of merging? And which ones - weak teams, some good teams? You mention that you have 34 teams across an AL & NL, but that you are going to a single league. So that could indicate that you are going to be merging a LOT of teams... And why would these teams be merging? Financial concerns? Or just that they are lousy?

Once I knew the answer to the above questions, then I would approach it from a "how would this be handled in real-life?" perspective.

At any rate, I'm thinking most of your plan would involve some manual moving of players, then deleting teams, etc., including with the minors...

My thought was to get down to 28 teams. I want one league so I can play against everybody. Actually last season I moved my team The Red Sox to the NL. As far as merging teams I was going for geographically Mets/Yankees, Dodgers/ Angels, etc. I won't finish my current season for a month or so so I'll have time to figure this out.

That's a hard scenario to envision - merging teams in the largest markets and not merging any teams in the smallest ones. I'm wondering what a reason would be that two teams can't exist in markets that are seven-to-ten times larger than some of MLB's smaller markets. But, hey, it's your game: Play it your way!

So what I would do would depend upon the current strength of those four teams. IOW, if both LA-area teams are decent, I wouldn't want them merging to create a super team. Regardless, I would make a list of their combined players and group them into five categories:

1) All-stars & top performers
2) Solid players
3) Roster-fillers
4) Top minor-league prospects
5) Other minor-leaguers

And then, depending upon the # of players in each category and what you feel would constitute a competitive, but not dominant, team, I'd allow the combined team to keep a certain number of players in each category, with the remainder in categories 1 and 2 going into a dispersal draft, and the remainder in categories 3, 4, and 5 becoming free agents. Or I might put the remainder in #4 into the dispersal draft, too.

As far as conducting a dispersal draft, OOTP has several kinds of drafts, none of which are described a "dispersal." However, my minimal and long-ago experience with OOTP drafts is that there is some flexibility with them and you may be able to configure of OOTP's draft types to accomplish a dispersal draft. Not sure. You might need to experiment with it (using backups & tests of your league). And if one of OOTP's drafts didn't work, you might need to conduce the "draft" manually.

Good luck!

I want to merge teams in the largest markets to make more super teams like mine. Then have the remaining bad teams draft the leftover free agents. Also, I am, considering a free agent draft so the worse teams can get the best free agents.
