Is there a way to play OOTP4 if you don't have a 1024 X 768 resolution? My monitor only goes up the 800 X 600. If I change it to 1024 X 768 the display is messed up and nothing is readable. Does the graphics setup option mean anything? I see "Direct 3D" mode and "Full Screen Mode". I am really a big fan of the front office games and would really appreciate if someone could help.
I have Windows XP and Direct X 8.1 drivers. EDIT: I have not tried it in 800 X 600 yet. It says I should have 1024 X 768 when I install it. I would like to know if I would have this problem before I purchase it. Thank You [ March 21, 2002: Message edited by: ps2fanatic_1 ]</p> |

I know some people have been able to function at 800x600... but I'm not sure what they had to do or how well they got it working...

I believe the ones that got it to work in 800x600 had one of those virtual desktops (virtual might not be the right word). I know what it is, but don't remember what its called... but here is what it does.
One of my older graphic cards had a feature where you could set the display to 800x600, but still see larger desktops. What would happen is it would display in the 800x600 window but if you moved your cursor to the edge of the screen, the entire desktop would slide up or down so you could see the part of the desktop that was not previously visible. Think of it as looking through binoculars. There is a large world out there for you to see, but the binoculars can only see a portion at a time. In order to see more, you have to move the binoculars left, right, up or down. You see more of the world, but still through the limited view of the binoculars. Hope this helps... as for me, by current laptops graphic card does not support this feature, so when I'm out of town, I'm forced to use the hard to read 800x600 setting.

I have windows XP and my monitor will only go up to 800X600. I was nervous purchasing OOTP4 but i had to take the risk =P I got it working however...I do not have full screen enabled but i enabled direct3D. I have a geforce2 card and i am using the 23.12 drivers (don't use 23.11 with a via chipset).

At first I thought laptop, but you have a Geforce2. I then see XP. So you either spent the hundred bucks on a OS upgrade or have an illegal burnt corporate edition copy.
My point is, buy a new monitor. They have come down a lot in price and you can get a 17 inch cheap. Personaly, I think the monitor is where a large amount of your PC dollars should be invested. It will generaly outlast your PC and its quality decides how well everything looks no matter how good your PC is.

I think I'm in the minority here, but I was always able to run OOTP3 in 800*600 if I used full-screen mode. In a window I still got the distorted text. You probably tried full-screen already, though. I got so tired of switching resolutions, I just use 1024*768 all the time now. But I have a pretty big monitor. If I had a 15", I'd probably be blind by now

I have an older monitor. I will upgrade it soon though. As for my video card, I just have an average card that came in the computer.

maybe I'm a mutant, but I never had a problem in 800x600 - that's how I always ran 3 on two different systems (desktop & laptop).

I've seen your picture. You are a mutant. I'd fill out an application for the Xmen now.

Illegal copy? Hardly...Microsoft was happy to send me a legit copy for free. I work in the field and built my system, if i could build a monitor i'd have a nice big one =P There were more important things for my money to go to, and that is MY prerogative not yours. I wasn't trashing OOTP for having troubles on 800X600, i was merely trying to help someone work through their problems.
