A Happy Surprise
So, I found myself in a spot recently. One of my mainstay starters, Bakal, got hurt during the game. Docs took a couple of days to assess, and then the word came down.
Torn flexor in his elbow. Gone for the season. Worse, his spot is coming up in the rotation, and my long man has had to pitch too much lately. He can't take the start. I look to my AAA club. My two top pitching prospects have just pitched. They can't take that next start. Then I realize -- I only need someone to take a single start. Just someone to give me five innings. Four in a pinch. Then I can bring up one of my primo prospects for the rest of the season. So what about Espinoza? He's my AAA spot starter. I signed him as a minor league free agent a few years back, and now he's 27 and looking like a career minor leaguer. But he's fully rested, and I only need one start. Just someone to give me a handful of innings. I give him a shot. And dear gods does he make the most of it. Now, honestly, it's his spot to lose.
