Day Six:
- Terunofuji and Hakuho hold serve - Mitekiumi was really fooled today and dropped a second match https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqrmSLaG_D0

Days 7, 8 and 9. Terunofuji and Hakuho are well out in the lead at 9-0 and headed for what could be an epic showdown on day 15.

Day Ten:
The Hakuho and Terunofuji trains are still on their collision course. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubqfsuXvVgY

Day eleven:
- A few wild matches in the middle - Tochinoshin staves off makekoshi for another day with a very nice win - Terunofuji and Hakuho remain dominant at 11-0 and now have a three-match lead over their closest followers - The showdown match is coming; hope they can both keep clean slates until then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY0wIA7OvwA

Day Twelve:
- Makekoshi for Tochinoshin :-( - Super long match between Kiribayama and Takayasu - Terunofuji - no trouble at all. Mitekiumi put up a decent fight but Hakuho rolls on too. Three days left with the challengers 3 behind Hakuho and Terunofuji. Tomorrow will be a pivotal day to see if it will be those two alone on Sunday in a big showdown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBssU4M13wE

Day thirteen:
- Ura executed the best move I've seen in a long time on Kaisei but fouled with a touch of the topknot as he pushed him out - ugh - Terunofuji had a real scare against Shodei but won as did Hakuho. That Sunday showdown for all the marbles is still on! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4Ff5zhvQ2k

The penultimate day:
- Fantastic match from Mitekiumi to get his kachikoshi - Terunofujo continues his dominance and moves to 14-0 - Hakuho engaged in the strangest tactics I have seen in a match to get to 14-0 Huge, huge day tomorrow with everything on the line. Who takes the Yusho? Will the counsel withhold Yokazuna status from Teronfuji if he loses to Hakuho? (I think they will. If two consecutive Yusho weren't enough for them, a 14-1 second-place finish won't be either) Big day tomorrow! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY4CVgb7jZg

Final Day:
Wow, wow, wow! - Some absolutely great matches on the last day - Tochinoshin is temporarily in old form and finishes 7-8 so he will be less likely to fall further on the next Banzuke even though he was kachikoshi - Tobizaru with an underarm throw - Mitakeumi was beautifully reversed by Wakatakakage - Hakuho and Tochinoshin had an epic stare-down at the start and had an excellent match! Could not have been a better finale. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O5DSHDBjTg

The Yokozuna Deliberation Committee announced today that it is recommending Terunofuji for promotion. He will become the 73rd Yokozuna on Wednesday.

Thanks. Hope to stir a new convert to sumo here and there!
For a little context, I mention above that Terunofuji has been named the 73rd Yokozuna. That dates back to the 1750s! There is a website somewhat / sort of like a baseball reference that has the records back to then organized for perusal. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/ The older records are somewhat sketchy. Here is one example for the March 1758 Basho. They have participants and ranks but no recorded results. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Banzuke.aspx?b=175803#M

The September Basho begins on Sunday. Here is the Banzuke before any noted dropouts for injury (or covid).
- First time for Terunofuji at Yokozuna - A little odd to see three Sekewaki this time (due to the dropping Ozeki Asanoyama) - Mitekeumi would need a 15-0 basho to get his Ozeki rank so that isn't happening. His 8-7 in July reset his Ozeki run, unfortunately. https://www.sumo.or.jp/EnHonbashoBanzuke/index/

Hakuho and the entire stable that he comes from (Miyagino Heya) are not going to compete due to positive covid tests in that stable. Nuts.

Day One:
- My favorites Tochinoshin and Mitakeumi had good opening days as did the new Yokozuna - Shame that Hakkuho is out due to covid in his stable. He doesn't have too many more bashos left in his long career and was back in healthy form https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYEaXBwrxDQ

- Not a great day for my favorites but some wild (one bloody) bouts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o211ObVRRaI

I have not had time to follow this basho, unfortunately. Looks like it was a good one. Here is the final days' matches. There was a tie for the lead heading into day 15 with Terunofuji looking for his fifth Yusho.

Well, we all knew it was coming soon. It's just tough to explain to someone that doesn't follow sumo how off the charts his career has been.
Here's one stat: Zensho Yusho: Winning the basho with an undefeated record. It is a rare thing. The Yokozuna with the second most is Futobayama who did it 8 times in his career (1936-1943) Hakuho retires with 16 Zensho Yushos.
