Early Feedback on New Cards?

I know it's very early, but how are people feeling about the cards that dropped last night? I hear folks are loving Gehrig. What else?

Crawford & Gehrig have both been awesome for me so far in my lefty park, albeit in a ridiculously tiny sample. Freehan will probably be a very popular catcher with that vL bat and elite catcher defense.

On the pitching side both Gooden & Cliff Lee have been great too, but again the samples are too small to really say much. I want to like Haddix as well but that MOV vR scared me off.

+1 to all of these comments.

I'm also running Stieb and he was good his first start at least, and trying out Sutter in a closer roll and he is 2 for 2. Gooden and Lee in the rotation as well. Offensively, I'm using Freehan both vL and vR which isn't ideal, but I don't have McCarver or Dickey. Lou Gehrig vR and Foxx vR, Crawford in left and Klein in RF vR. I wanted to try out a decent amount of the new guys.

I've had the rng gods really frown upon me this year, almost to the point of worrying about relegation to gold after playing in PeL not that long ago so I'm tempted to run some "use more often" Dibble action just to see wtf happens.

I have a Reds theme team, so naturally Dibble is closing. Small sample size thus far, of course, but here's what he's done in Gold League:

OK, so the image didn't post, lol.

5G, 1-1, 2 SV, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 1.17 WHIP

In my insanely small sample;

- Golden looks good in my rotation and I am feeling positive about Gagne and Sutter in the pen. I haven’t tried Dibble because his MOV scares me. It’s feels great to have true relievers back in my pen.
- Crawford and Gehrig look to be beasts. Klein and Foxx, not so much yet,

Is Freehan an upgrade on Crandall or are they gonna be pretty similar?

Yeah I think so. The gloves are pretty similar, with Freehan only slightly better there. But the bats aren't close, Freehan is a big upgrade there.

Yeah Freehan over Crandall for sure. Was really hoping for a vR catcher drop but honestly Freehan isn't that far behind McCarver there.

Gehrig has been as good as advertised for me so far, .338/7/23 with 1.169 OPS in 23 games. Klein and Foxx both with .850ish OPS so very solid. Crawford has been a bit slow out of the gate for me though. Pitching wise Gooden has been ok - a bit of BABIP bad luck and mid 4s ERA but about a K per 9 he'll be fine. Lee has been great (sub 2 ERA) through 5 starts, Stieb has been solid mid 3s ERA and Sutter has been average, converting 5 out of 7 saves. Going to be tough to keep him around with all the great starter arms, as he really is better as a righty specialist.

All in all a very good set that added a very good amount of playable cards. RF and 1B were in a surprisingly stale state so they definitely attacked that in the set, plus the obligatory 3-4 SPs worth considering and a couple interesting relievers - and a meta vL catcher to boot.

Honestly I think the coolest card is Sam Crawford to free up some roster spots. He can legit play every defensive position in the OF + 1B, hits lefties well enough to not be a black hole, plus can definitely be a starter vR. I would be surprised if he isn't on almost every PeL roster. 90+ range in a LF is not easy to find so I expect he starts there.

Crandall has been good for me, so I'd think that that would mean Freehan is pretty good.

A couple of comments on recent posts:

- Give Gehrig time. He has a 200 OPS+ for me so far. The truth is in between our results to date but he is clearly a strong 1B option.
- I immediately dropped Crandall for Freehan. He’s not hitting much yet but he’ll be fine. Also, Mauer just keeps on producing as my vR catcher. This season he has 2.4 WAR going into Saturday with a 110 OPS+. He has a strong arm and has thrown out just over half of the would be stealers (52 of 103). That is big with the top base runners you face in Diamond.
- As a side note, I still can’t believe that I have demoted Musial and Yaz. Raines just keeps on producing for me in LF, DiMaggio is cemented in CF, Klein/Kaline make for a killer platoon out in RF, and Crawford is amazing as a utility outfielder. It doesn’t leave room for anyone else.

I was amazed when logging on Friday and found I only had to hit the submit button to acquire him (resisting selling Joe Gordon really paid off). He is off the mark with a Grand Slam today.
Agree about Raines, this is his first full season and leads the team in HR, RBI and SB in diamond.

Part of Raines’ value is that as a switch hitter, he is effective as an every day LF which creates great flexibility in setting up platoons elsewhere. I’m giving Crawford some vR starts in both left and center so that he isn’t sitting on the bench too much.

I wasn’t going to bother with Raines when I started back in June but then pulled Joe Kelley so thought I may as well go for it. Wish I had targeted him first of all rather than a few questionable decisions.
The other big surprise is Ozzie Smith who consistently averages around .270 despite that contact rating of 78.

What are his OBP and SLG typically, and at what level?

1. Gooden - Definite Ace or #2 Starter.
2. Freehan - Upgrade from Crandall
3. Gehrig - Great DH against righties
4. Sutter - Him and Gagne upgrade the closing staff
5. Crawford - Great bat and fielder in the OF
6. Cliff Lee - Slightly better than Glavine?
7. Haddix - Another great lefty

This is in Diamond:

- Freehan really hasn’t impressed. I’ve had better seasons out of Crandall.
- Gehrig/Fox has been very good as long as you play the platoons. Neither have hit much vs same sided pitchers
- Pee Wee Reese has been very good vs L to replace Vaughn.
- Crawford and Klein have been better then average. The fact both are lefties makes figuring out the OF tricky, as so is Yaz. I like that Crawford can play all three OF positions. Klein has been a terror vs righties.

- None of the pitchers have been amazing. Currently using Lee and Gooden in the rotation.
