Waiving someone and paying it all now

Is it no longer possible to waive someone and pay his entire salary in the current year?

I'm asking for an online league, so maybe it's just not allowed in online?

I know it used to be an option in the past (and I'm pretty sure in online), but it doesn't ask anymore.

Is it gone or am I doing something wrong or what?

Waiving a player does nothing but make him available on the waiver list. Release him and see what options you get.

When I do it, it doesn't give me any option, just says it is spread out over the course of the contract length. (which in reality just means you owe him the same regardless)

Online leagues always spread out the payment - it's a function of how the export gets processed that it can't plan it any other way.

In solo leagues you get the option if you can afford it in the current year.

I've always been afraid to try this. What happens if I release someone and pay out the full balance of their salary. Chances are I'll blow my budget for the year and likely have a major loss. When the next year rolls around is everything okay? Is there longer term impact to budget, etc.?

If you pay it all out in this season there is nothing on your books beyond this year. If you don't plan to use the money it is a great idea.

If the player only has one year remaining on a contract, then you may as well, as nothing additional will be added. ( I don't believe anyways)

Aye but what would be the consequences of finishing the year on a big fat negative number? Never tried it myself, but there's probably something, like the team owner slashing your budget big time next season.

you won't have any cash on hand... maybe a negative max value? 10M being default.

owner take profits or adds money for losses each year... if it impacts anything it will only be your "max cash on hand" carryover.

If that's the case then when I take over a franchise, I can release a player with 200M left in some horrible contract, pay it out in one shot, and suffer no consequences whatsoever.

What's stopping me from waiting until, say, the day after the trade deadline when my roster is basically final and the budget for that year is no longer a concern, and at that point just release any useless vets with long contracts?

Or releasing just before the offseason.

that's exactly when i make those decisions, lol...

once i'm mostly set or can calculate out a few things early in offseason.... it is most definitely a better idea to pay it all now in nearly all contexts... too bad for online leagues, lol. I'm not a big fan of overpaying at the deadline... if i need more bullpen help, i get it before the season starts... injury replacement trade? maybe, but those july trades often hurt you more than they help you in the short-term.

just taking up a roster spot as late as approaching offseason... but, could...

Look into front-loading some contracts while costs are rising... will give you tens of millions more to spend later on as you continue to spend more on team...

even when payroll is falling, can be helpful in numerous contexts, if you can afford it without causing any negative issues elsewhere.

money is fuel... maximize it as best you can when you need it most. kicking can down the road is what the RL instant-gratification GM's do now. they know there\s a good chance they are fired before they even see the negative impacts of their atrocious financial management. (or, they bail like Dumbrowski due to a crazy, senile owner running a team into the ground for a pipedream tht was impossible to happen at that point, and don't want to the bad publicity from what is overtly obvious to anyone that is not a dying billionaire with a narcissist personality disorder)
