online league - website design issues
I am hoping that other people have run into the issue that I am seeing. So with an online league after every sim is run by the league simmer you have a league zip file which is uploaded to the FTP server so that it can be downloadable for the rest of the league members.
The problem that I am seeing is that if you have a link to this file so that others can click on the link to download the file, that while the file is being uploaded the link fails and you receive an error on the web page. I am first wondering if others also see this? Has anyone figured a workaround? Hack solution: I have come up with a hack work around for this issue but I am not thrilled with it. I wrote a cgi-perl script that when the webpage with this link on it is loading up, it checks the file size of the file - waits two seconds - checks the file size again. If the file size has changed then it assumes the file is still being uploaded and does not display the file name as a link. The problem here is obviously that I have instituted a two second delay into this page loading up. I am open to any ideas on this.

I don't send a message to the league that the file is ready for download until the entire site is updated, so I haven't really run into this issue.

Although my league knows I traditionally run the sim around 10pm Pacific, it's not certain exactly when the new league file will be available for download. I send an email to the league and change the date on the league front page, only after the entire file is up.

I have tried to download a league file while the commish was still uploading it. I’ve been commishing a league for about six months now and I rarely have owners try to download my league file very soon after I post it (say three hours or less). The conflict of an owner trying to download a still-uploading league file is uncommon.

we are running into the problem on a regular basis of people trying to download the file as it is uploading. everyone knows that are simms are run at 8:30pm on certain days and most of the owners are extremely eager to download the file.
i have the date on the file change automatically thorugh a perl script so that i do not have to manually change it. see i am the web designer but not the simmer so i would not know it was up to change it manually nor do i want to have to change the file manually. obviously thisis not a huge problem but jsut one of those little things that i have run into. what would be nice is if when the ootp5 program uploaded the file it would lock it so that then i could check if the file is locked and go according to this.

Tell them if they attempt to download the file, without written premission in the form of an e-mail, they will get there heads choped off.

Some OotP heads would sit slavering, watching and waiting for a sim to run? I’ve not seen the like. *cough*

Solution:
You can upload the file with a different file name then, rename it to the "league file" name after the transfer is completed.. Just a thought. Manny |

or change the link each new file. That way nobody can download a file that has no link. Then upload the front page for the league, which I would guess you do already with any news etc.

I run my own web server, and it takes me less than 15 seconds to put the zip file on the server, so if somebody happens to try and download at the same time, they are **** outta luck for those 15 seconds...

well your computer and network connection must be a lot quicker than our simmer. it seems to take him 15-20 minutes to upload the files during certian times of the season. there are times when it is quicker.
really i was just wondering if anyone had figured a work around to this issue.
