Field of Dreams Game

I loved it. As much as it pains me to see the White Sox doing so well as a Cubs fan, I loved it. I personally think going forward that MLB should have the All-Star Game there every year going forward. Yes, 8,000 fans in attendance is low, but think of the ratings. I guarantee you that next year if they did this the ratings would be their highest in decades.

Boring. Cheap publicity stunt to make money on ads.

Do people really think Field of Dreams was about baseball? If so, please watch the movie or better read the book.

As it turns out, Canton comes a lot closer to ratings heaven than Iowa.

Last Thursday, Fox televised the first NFL preseason game of the 2021 season. This Thursday, Fox televised the much-hyped Field of Dreams baseball game. And the football game drew a much larger audience.

Fox had an average audience of 7.3 million for Cowboys-Steelers in a football game that ultimately means nothing. Seven days later, Fox drew 5.9 million for the Yankees and the White Sox in a regular-season baseball game played in an iconic location.

That’s not a knock on baseball; it’s just a statement of numbers-don’t-lie fact. It was indeed the highest-rated regular-season baseball game in 16 years. But when that new high-water mark still falls 1.4 million viewers behind a football games replete with backups, it demonstrates that, when it comes to football, if you build it, a lot more people will come.

I suspect that most people know it's about the relationship between fathers and sons. I watched this game with my son, enjoyed it immensely, and hope it will be done again in the future.

The apples to apples comparison happens in this sentence:

That says a lot about how people felt about the game. And, really, is a much more honest take on the numbers than comparing it against a sport that routinely out performs it.

I didn't get to see any of the game but I did get to see the clip of Costner coming out of the corn onto the field and then moments later the players coming out of the corn. I teared up. That was magical.

And besides, sometimes a cheap publicity stunt with ads is acceptable, given the product offered in return. Nearly 6 million people thought so. I did.

I'm not sure that they should do this every year, though. The novelty will wear off quickly. Perhaps in a few years and with different teams invited.

Which brings up an interesting question. What teams? Don't tell me the ChiSox are the perpetual home team. That bores me already.

Only the "legacy" teams that go way back? No expansion teams? Certainly not the A*tros, please.

I think this is close to where I land on this too. It's a cool event, which is what it's supposed to be (events are "stunts" that bring in extra viewers and revenue), but I want it to remain special if/when it happens. It may lose that specialness if it's done every year. Or it may not, but I think money-making organizations tend toward over-saturation rather than patience and keeping things special.

MLB.tv blacks out "local" games. It doesn't care what channel a game is on TV.

If you build it, MLB will black it out

See here. I believe 6 teams are not available.

I definitely know that their blackout rules are stupid but it doesn't seem to apply to this game. Why do you need mlbtv for a game thats on free tv?

There could be a multitude of reasons someone would need to watch through MLB.tv rather than regular TV. But because of the silly blackout restrictions, in Iowa, the place where the game was held, and in Chicago, where one of the teams playing is from, as well as Minneapolis, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Kansas City, fans couldn't watch through the app.

I'm surprised blackouts are still a thing. They seem a relic of a previous time (that should've been done away with pre-streaming even)

On a personal note, I appreciate the people I know but I get annoyed when I get Text about "aren't you excited your Jets are winning" in preseason game! I just don't care about any of my teams preseason games beyond that the players are ready for the regular season.

Another personal note, I do not even watch much NFL anymore as I have gotten into the CFL. I love the rivalries and that all teams play each other. Also I will choose MLB over NFL almost any day, but I get it that I am in the minority in this country.

As a Sox fan I loved it minus Liam sucking lately. TA7 hitting a walkoff was great though. I was supposed to go there a few weeks ago but plans were changed. Hope to go next summer. Part of me is glad that they will continue it for a few years even if a bad Cubs & possibly bad Angels team will play there next year. I like Otani so as long as he starts and hits i will like it.
