AI Manager Fired after Making it to World Series
This is from a 100 year fictional sim I'm doing before I take over in 2000. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this. The Cincinnati Reds just fired their manager after making it to the playoffs three out of the last four years, including a World Series berth just before he got fired.
From the news feed: "The Reds have been a rudderless ship for a while now. Manny didn't seem fully focused on the job. Seemed distracted. Something was going on there. We need a new guy to step in and really take charge." ![]()

Nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can tell. Before he was hired, the Reds were perennial losers, making it to the playoffs only once in the previous 13 seasons. This guy leads them to three division titles in five years and gets fired after pushing the Yankees to the limit in a seven-game World Series.

Maybe the owner expectation was to "win it all" every season? That and maybe he's a finicky type. Can we see the owner's traits?

Is the owner related to George Steinbrenner?
Is the Manager connected to Billy Martin in any way at all? Friends, maybe worked together, etc That would explain a lot

I'm assuming Marg Schott (Sr.) wasn't the owner.
Just searching for an explanation. |

Unfortunately, I've simmed down the line to get to the year 2000, so I didn't think to look at the owner's tendencies.
I'll keep an eye out to see if I notice something like this happening again. If it does, I'll report it in the bugs forum. It could have just been some weird anomaly.

The Giants let Dusty Baker go after losing in the World Series in 2002. The Yankees have done it a few times, as mentioned. Other managers have been let go after really good seasons. It’s definitely happened with coaches in other sports too…that quote about him not being focused on the job reminded me of Larry Brown getting fired because he was more interested in securing a job in the Cavs front office or on the Knicks bench than repeating as NBA champions with the Pistons.
As long as it’s rare, I don’t mind some off the wall things that are unexplainable on the surface happening once in a while. You just have to use a little artistic license to fill in the gaps and make it make sense. |

I want to hear Manny's side of the story after being fired due to lack of focus. He just led the team to the World Series and multiple playoff trips for an organization that had only been once in the dozen years before he arrived. Where will he land? His reputation is Excellent.

i'm sure it has to do with personality preference or something... maybe, ai can see the suck ratings under the hood? (use editor to see if he is truly pedestrian or not..) if so, chalk it up to them knowing more from working with the guy... like in RL if 2 ppl can't work together, even with sucessful results, they will split quickly. (simplified)

I would love to see OOTP address the available jobs problem at some point as well. If I decide late in a season to look for a managing job, one or two of the first place teams should not be listed as one of my options. I'm rated an inexperienced manager, I seriously doubt a contender is going to ditch their manager and hire me. The only teams available should be the ones struggling.

I always have to laugh when a Japanese or Korean manager gets the job. I'm sure they'd do great. But everything would have to be through an interpreter

And here's what just happened in my 100-year sim...
In my Flags Fly Forever League, you win the pennant, or you go home. The Brooklyn Kings became the first National League team ever to win 4 straight pennants, then came up a bit short in their bid for a league-record 5th straight. And, well, this happened...(owner, manager, and GM in next post).

Owner, manager, and GM in question
I know the owner is demanding, but still, expectations seemed to have been a bit...high.
(I also wonder why San Diego let Hansen go in the first place...) Last edited by JasonC23; 08-01-2021 at 04:03 PM. |

The fate of the next Brooklyn GM
The next GM after being fired...who could have seen this coming?
