Waive & Designate for Assignment

I have a player who is being paid $10 million in the current year of the contract. He is playing in AAA because he doesn't even have the talent to be on the active roster.

I would like to clear a sport on the AAA 28 man roster because this guy is just a waste. I don't want to outright release him however for obvious financial reasons. In previous versions of OOTP I think I remember you could just keep waiving and designating the player for assignment over and over again....this would allow me to not have to pay the entire $10 million the way I would have to if I released him...and would allow me to keep the player in "no man's land" so he doesn't eat up a roster spot.

I am wondering if you can still do this in OOTP 22? (before I do it) If so, it feels like a "cheat" to me. I thought I may be remember reading somewhere here that now you have to either trade or release the player once his DFA time expires. Is this the case? As you can imagine, this player is simply not really tradable.

Afraid you're stuck with his salary. If you really don't want him anywhere in your minors (not even for an injury emergency) then might as well release him. His salary will count against your finances either way so...

yes, but if I release him...I'll be paying all at once....which could (I think) affect my ability to trade or sign a free agent later on in the season. If I keep sending him to the DFA list, his salary stays on the books, but I don't take the big hit....but like I said something about this feels like a "cheat" and I am wondering if it's still possible to do it...before hand.

Hmm no. I'm quite sure you are offered the option to pay yearly or all at once. Check it out.

It's not going to affect/change. your cash for FA either way. That amount is calculated: budget + cash less projected expenses for remainder of the season. His entire salary is already incl in the projected expenses so there is no impact on your 'cash for FA' if you release him now.

One other "ploy" I use as a GM stuck with a preexisting bad deal is to begin a Shop Player with the offending guy, then use the buttons to increase the amount of their contract you are willing to eat. I keep bumping it up, figuring in most cases, paying a percentage between 25 and 50 and passing along a pox player is better than stewing about it every time you check the books.
It doesn't always work, but you can usually throw in a few prospects to sweeten the deal unless his salary is like Miggy's $30M. Luckily, Miggy met all his milestones records in my first Tiger GM year and retired! (whew...)
Worth a shot.

Retire him. He is 'pissed" about being in the minors and decided he wanted to spend more time with his newborn.

As was said, you can release him and either choose to eat his entire salary the first year or eat his salary one year at a time. 10M is not too bad. Maybe you could get something serviceable if you traded him while retaining his salary ?

If you want him gone, I've had success having such useless/overpaid players (i.e. Chris Davis in 2021) retiring by having these players benched. Even better if you bench them in the minors.
