Starting Unemployed?

I am new to the game and wanted to start unemployed. My question would be will I receive MLB offers as GM+Manager right away? I'm basically using unemployment as a way to pick a team for me, I was going to sim the first season and then pick a team based on who offered me, but all I'm seeing about this strategy is GM *or* Manager and seems to involve working your way up the ladder.

I would like to start in MLB and do both GM & Manager, just want to make sure this would work or if there's something specific I need to do to ensure I'd get offers from at least one MLB team who has fired their staff during the first season?

Thanks for your help!

I’m pretty sure if you have GM+Manager checked on your settings page then if you take a GM job you’ll also be the manager by default. They just don’t list GM+manager in the available jobs screen. Hope that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense, thanks! Do you know if MLB jobs are offered in the first season or if you have to work your way up?

Speaking from my rookie experience in ‘21, yes you do get a couple of MLB teams touting for you, starting as unemployed. Though I opted to run a small team at first, just to get a feel for the game - in soccer terms don’t manage Manchester United, until you cut your teeth with Darlington!!

Exclamation

Like the OP,I am new to the game, but had looked at a couple of YouTuber's tutorial series.I decided that GM would likely have long lasting results for any newbie mistakes, and doubling up as manager would increase the workload and cock-up possibilities too high.
So I blagged my way into the manager's role with the Diamond Bar Tornado, the Pirate's AA affiliate, for the 1980 season. The start date is because I have kept my real date of birth, and 1980 was the first year I took a real interest in baseball.
This has proved a swift learning experience, more so because this is a bad team. You quickly have to decide what serviceable skills you need and what skills you can live without - the hitter who can hit the ball over the stand but can't catch a cold or the contact hitter who can't beat the hot-dog vendor in a footrace.Plus, you know that anybody starting to be consistently useful is off to AAA quite soon.

The one decision I am not sure about is whether I am to manage the team to try and win games or whether I am to try and improve the warm bodies the GM sends me. Anybody care to comment as both choices could impact my future positively or negatively.

TommyDisorda,

I used to play by managing a minor league team much for the same reasons as you.

I haven't done that with OOTP22 yet, but I seem to remember that you are given some goal(s) by the owner. First and foremost, try to meet that (those) goal(s).

Secondly, try to win as many games as you can. It will be a challenge. You will get plenty of experience in evaluating new players and how they fit into the (not so) well oiled machine that will be your team.

Thirdly, play however it makes you happy. The very worst that can happen is that you start a new game with lessons learned and more goals in mind.

I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy the journey.

Thanks for the encouragement,Samurai.

I was given a goal by the owner of 'not being an embarrassment'so I think he knew it was a poor team.If you overlook the 0 - 11 start,16 - 32 probably fits.The cellar-dweller in the other division had a 0 - 22 slump!!

The reason I asked about goals is that IINM many of the minor league clubs were independently owned, and had agreements with a MLB club regarding players.

Onwards and sideways, and maybe I can achieve my first personal goal and remember to warm up my relief pitchers.

That would depend a lot on league structure, year, etc.

My experience was playing for an associated team. Good players were plucked away from me at a whim and new players assigned (from above or below).

I don't recall ever getting instructions about 'play this person a lot' or any other specifics for player development. I did try to give every player some playing time until they showed they were inept, but that was just me.

For what it is worth, I have just started a new league (fictitious teams & players) in the 1870s and am sorting through the players without supporting stats from prior years' play. The experience I got from doing what you are doing now has been very helpful.
