Relax fred. Guardians is hardly a name of the woke leftists. It's a name more likely to be selected in the context of Guardians of the Second Amendment than Guardians of Health Care For All.

Dunno fred. You're saying sarcastically that White Sox is supremacist but it's a fact they changed their name from Black Sox.

I have an idea maybe we'd still have "Indians" if it wasn't for Chief Wahoo. Even years ago as a kid I thought that was over the top.

And look at these two logos. The first is terribly insulting to pirates. Really casts them in a bad light. The second looks like an insurance salesman in a pirate costume for a Halloween party.

Isn't that second one Mel Gibson?

I was amazed Rockers was even a finalist. Baseball recycling WNBA team names would surely be a sign of the end times, and I say that as a fan of the W.

What Do You Think of the New Cleveland Nickname?

Cleveland announced their new nickname.
It will be the Cleveland Guardians.

Does anyone know how Guardians is related to Cleveland?

Sorry, just my opinion, but they had to have much better choices.

I lived in Cleveland for one year in 1989... don't know how the new nickname is connected to the city or Cleveland area.

I'm glad they kept the Cleveland Indians colors.

Also glad the name is a decent nickname and not a goofy one like the minor leagues have been picking in recent years... it could have been much worse.

I don't like it at all. I think they should have gone with the Cleveland Spiders... to pay homage to the Cleveland Spiders baseball team from the past. They could have done some amazing logos with the Spiders.

There's a thread in the Talk Sports section in which a couple of the forum members from Cleveland explain the name.

The White Sox were never called the Black Sox, they changed their name in 1903 from White Stockings to White Sox and have been known by that name ever since.

The scandal of the 1919 World Series was called "The Black Sox Scandal" but the team was indeed called the White Sox.

Would have been fun to see people confuse "Rockers" with "Rockies" though.

As a kid growing up in up in cle i can said unequivocally, we NEVER discussed race or ethnicity or made fun of american indians or any players based on a color....we never discussed the logo.....if anything we thought indians were AWESOME.....and loved the chief wahoo and big drum pounding in the outfield.
Rico Carty and Oscar Gamble were FAVORITES......we went outside and played sandlot and running bases all day long....then organized.....we did not value baseball cards on race......we overvalued our local team than other city teams.
College Years.......same.....
working years.....same......
now? could care less... hate all pro sports........which is why i LOVE OOTPB!!!! i don't need pro sports at all.....

I polled my friends on the new name......out of 10 response so far:
1 liked it
6 don't care
3 hate it
1 really hates it

There is zero connection of the name to the city.
If I cared......I think Spiders is better.....but I think Guardians is ok.

Thankfully OOTPB exists and i can call them and use whatever logos i like : )

Cleveland owner Paul Dolan noted Friday he hopes the name Guardians helps "unify our fans and city."
LOLOLOL
no not stopping raging inflation, or rampant crime, or corruption in local govt, or local homeless.....
The GUARDIANS will save the world!
~~~~~
The name Guardians, the club's first renaming in more than a century, is a reference to the statues on Cleveland's Hope Memorial Bridge, which are known as the “Guardians of Traffic.” ...
LOLOLOL - that is an incredibly VAUGE reference........
to give you context......that is the area where you get off and are in Speed trap heaven.........thousands of times downtown, lived there........NO ONE ever uttered GUARDIANS of TRAFFIC.......
Guardians? Meh. Whatever. Any team with a nickname three syllables or longer is going to be known by a shortened form anyway.
  • Cardinals - Cards
  • Mariners - M's
  • Orioles - O's
  • Diamondbacks - D'backs
  • Guardians - Guards? G's?
Like others here, I too would have preferred Spiders, but the historical connection is actually pretty tenuous. Back in the 19th century, teams didn't have official nicknames. I'm sure the Cleveland club was officially known as the "Cleveland Baseball Club" or something like that. Any team nickname that you see in Baseball Reference or other sources is likely a moniker that was applied to the team by sportswriters looking to punch up their copy. Brooklyn had a bunch of players who were newlyweds? Call them the "Bridegrooms." Boston is famous for baked beans? Call the team the "Beaneaters." Chicago has a bunch of young players? Call them the "Cubs."
So someone noticed that the Cleveland team had a bunch of tall, skinny players who were all arms-and-legs and who looked kinda' like spiders when they scrambled around the field. Sportswriters took up the nickname and used it as an alternative to the more common "Clevelands" when referring to the team in print. Did fans use it? Probably not very often. Did the players use it? I doubt it. Indications are that they didn't much like being compared to spiders. And in the last two years of the Cleveland NL franchise's existence, it had a number of competing nicknames, including the Wanderers, the Exiles, and even the Indians.
I think Spiders is a cool nickname in its own right. The historical connection is almost accidental.
Yeah, but "Spiders" may cross the line in some regards. It's really, really hard to warm up to spiders. I look through the other MLB nicknames and I find nothing even close to giving me the creeps like spiders do. Not even diamondbacks.
Not just the logo. The Padres team name AND the Angels team name have to go until we can get the DEVIL Rays back. Gotta keep this balanced.
