Bill C Phillips
Bill Phillips’s professional baseball career spanned a quarter century from 1890 to 1915. Phillips utilized a full repertoire of pitches. Besides his fastball and curveball, he threw a changeup that was described as “superlatively deceptive,” and with a submarine motion he delivered an “underhand curve” and an “underhand raise.” He also threw an emery ball, and he may have been the first to throw a blooper or eephus pitch.
On August 17, 1900, Phillips lost his cool on a 90-degree day in Cincinnati while pitching to Roy Thomas of the Philadelphia Phillies. Trying to get a base on balls, Thomas deliberately “fouled off ten balls or more.” He was known for this trick; he “had the practice of turning good strikes into mere fouls so perfected that he could take his usual cut at the ball and, getting a piece of it, foul it straight over the catcher’s shoulders.” After umpire Bob Emslie ignored Phillips’s protest, Phillips punched Thomas, knocking him to the ground. Emslie then ejected Phillips, who quickly and sincerely apologized. In 1901, the National League introduced the foul-strike rule, whereby a foul ball with fewer than two strikes is counted as a strike, to discourage the tactic employed by Thomas. Redid the facegen from scratch using the far right picture. luckymann, only about a dozen more to go on your requested facegens - I'll get there! |

Dick J Harley
"ALL WANT DICK HARLEY. There is a chance that Dick Harley will not be with the Detroit Club next year, as his splendid work with the Cincinnatis during the series of games in Philadelphia brought the fact forcibly before the magnates that he is a very valuable man. . . several clubs are now bidding for his services." - Sporting Life, October 13, 1900 [I gotta think Dick himself was the source for this reporting - or Scott Boras' great-great-grandfather]
Dick Harley had the misfortune of being a regular on the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, probably the worst team ever in the National League. In general, while in the majors, he was not much of a hitter, although he could steal a base and draw a walk, and was good at getting hit by the pitch. His range in the outfield was pretty good early in his career. Prior to 1899 he had already been a regular on two teams in 1897-98 which had lost over 100 games. He spent most of 1900 in the new minor-league American League with Detroit, hitting .325. Same facegen just made younger, nose fixed, face widened and other tweaks to try and get it to align with the photo. |

Al L Shaw
Al Shaw played four years with four different major league teams from 1901-1909. He was primarily a catcher. He was born in England and made his major league debut at age 28 in the first year that the American League was a major league. He hit .269 (the team average was .279) and was backup catcher to Fritz Buelow on the 1901 Detroit Tigers. Six years later, he was again in the majors with the 1907 Boston Americans, this time as backup catcher to Lou Criger. At this point, however, he couldn't hit a lick...
Easy to confuse him with the other Al Shaw (Cardinals outfielder). Even on the Cardinals' Al Shaw bio, they accidently used the Detroit photo from 1901 of this Al Shaw. They look nothing alike however... Last edited by LansdowneSt; 07-13-2021 at 05:44 PM. |

Ed McFarland
Catcher Ed McFarland played fourteen years in the majors, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox. Above average in both hitting and fielding, his best year with the bat was 1899 when he hit .333 with the Phillies. Late in his career, he was part of the White Sox team that won the 1906 World Series.
Part of luckymann's 1903 requests. There was no Minor League Historical ID so saved as his Major League ID. EDIT: Removed the "before" picture as I think it was fictional - I usually refresh to check but forgot to before screenshotting it) Last edited by LansdowneSt; 07-13-2021 at 06:12 PM. |

George Zackert
Left-handed pitcher George Zackert was one of a trio of 1911 St. Louis Cardinals who made their major-league debuts on the same day. He was also released by the same Cardinals organization three times in eight months, and had one trade that was negotiated by unauthorized personnel director Roger Bresnahan get “busted up.” As a result of the disallowed trade, press reports noted "St. Louis was recently ordered to pay the salary of player Zachert from the beginning of the season of 1912 'until he is formally released'. The commission held that his transfer to the Montreal club was not legally completed."
Overall, George went 0-2 in five games with an 11.88 ERA and 4.22 FIP. My favorite bit in his SABR bio was that after leaving the game behind, he became a grocer and the SABR researcher noted that: "George was fined $50 in 1950 for illegal possession of a hen pheasant." Ah, the small town troubles of Burlington, Iowa..." ![]() Same facegen, just colorized |

Luis Castro
Colombia-born Luis Castro was the second Latin American-born Major League Baseball player in the United States, and the first Latin American since Cuban player Esteban Bellán in 1873 to play professional baseball. If one does not consider the National Association a major league, then Castro was the first Latin American to play in Major League Baseball. He played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1902, hitting .245 with a home run in 42 games and 143 at bats.
I had no facegen for him in my files and so created this one from the picture shown. |

Charlie Krause 1901
In case you were still searching for Krause, here is a confirmed image from a semi-pro team in 1905.

Charlie Krause
cinemaodyssey - many thanks for the image!
That false image from post #506, once you see it, turns up on several players that were only in one game. I'm sure someone tagged it to all those players with the best of intentions but I'd rather have no facegen than a fake one. This one was a challenge. I went on the assumption that he has a mustache but I was challenged on trying to both color the facegen, smooth out the pixels. and still keep the mustache. I think this one keeps the facial structure intact and the coloring stands in okay enough for the mustache. So long after his playing days are done, with the semi-pro team photo as a guide, here's 1 G 1-4 hitting, Charlie Krause... |

Mark Baldwin
"Although never known for a good curve, or changeup, [Baldwin] had plenty of speed and the gumption to challenge the best hitters." Robert L. Tiemann, Baseball's First Stars
Nicknamed "Fido", Mark Baldwin went 154-165 in his seven-year career including stops with the Columbus Solons in the AA and the Chicago Pirates in the 1890 Player's League. New facegen to replace the one I had in my pack... |

Dan Davidsmeier was a steady if unspectacular shortstop for the Vancouver Canadians from 1983-1986. You'd think four seasons might get you a September squint at one point, but no. (I grant you the parent Brewers already had a pretty good SS, but still.)
In 1987, the Brew Crew switched their AAA farm to Denver, which might have boosted Dan's stats…but he only played a whopping TWO games before he was sent down to El Paso. And he had a devilish time with the Diablos (I'm sure summer in El Paso felt like Hell after he got used to Vancouver) and that was it. In this sim, he was the 11th round draft of the Angels, zipped through Redding and Holyoke, and made it to Anaheim before season's end. Things are a lot easier when Robin Yount isn't ahead of you, I guess. (Not that Yount's a Brewer in the sim, but you know what I mean.) Yount did not win AL MVP, by the way. Nor did Fred Lynn, who would have been my choice. Tony Armas (.322, and a league-high 40 HR/124 RBI) got the hardware, which surprised me, given that Oakland lost 90 games. Now he's with a better team in a better hitter's park, having gone to Detroit as a FA, so we'll see how high is up. Matlack got his Cy Young, though, so I can't complain about the voting too much.

Ernie Koy
Ernie Koy was an outfielder 13 years, 1930 to 1942, three in college, five in the Major Leagues and five in the minors. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and never returned to baseball.
He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a bachelor of science degree in 1933. He played both football and baseball there. He was a powerfully-built righthanded hitter with blazing speed. A Dodger regular in 1938 and 1939, he homered in his first major league at-bat on April 19, 1938. A son, Ernie Jr., played for the pro football Giants from 1965 to 1970. Another son, Ted, was also an NFL football player and his daughter, Margaret, was one of the first woman sportswriters in Texas. Redid the facegen as it was too hard to bring the old one back to life. Also smoothed it out as the the facial lines made him look older than he ought in the initial fg creation. |

Dan Davidsmeier
Dan Davidsmeier settling in as a California Angel...
Redid the facegen. The one that came up for me was pretty awful. In my 1979 Forward Sim, I've had George Foster and Rice (Triple Crown) win MVP in '79 with Tommy John and Scott Sanderson win the Cy. In '80, it was Brett in the AL and Dale Murphy in NL with Eck for my Sox winning the AL Cy and Sanderson repeating for the Expos. '81 underway... |

Ed Kantlehner
Ed Kantlehner, nicknamed "Peanuts", was a hard-luck pitcher who pitched in the middle of the 1910's. His lifetime ERA was 2.84, but his win/loss record was 13-29. In 1914, with the Federal League draining away some talent from the National League, the Pittsburgh Pirates gave him 21 games to pitch, and he responded with a 3.09 ERA and a 3-2 record. In 1915, Peanuts appeared in 29 more games, with a 2.26 ERA and a 5-12 record. In eight of his losses, the Pirates were shut out. His ERA was sixth-best in the National League. In 1916, he was back with Pittsburgh, posting a 5-15 record. He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in September, and in 4 innings with them, gave up 4 runs. It was his last time in the majors.
Facegen had to be redone from scratch. |

Tigers prospect Cristian Santana... I had to smooth him out a bit as the colors came in a bit odd from this picture. But he's just a babe anyway so he wears it well...

Dillon Dingler...
Note that for these Tigers, I'm saving the fg files as the bRef Minor League code. I make my facegens in OOTP 21 in case I mess up and once I like them I move them to 22. A consequence of that is I can't import new players as they aren't in 21. For these particular screenshots, I just edit a random player, rename them, and paste the ID in there. If the Minor League ID is different in the game, please resave the file to match it. Thanks. |

Adinso Reyes
Adinso Reyes. I had to consult other pics for the coloring as this one has a taken-over-Zoom feel but it was the best straight-on shot of his face.
