who uses Career Fielding ratings?

who uses Career Fielding ratings?
I thought this would be a good idea as i think for whatever year you import it applies any position ever played by the player.

That seems to increase the overall value of all players.
The ratings seem way off as a player with only a few innings played seem to get remarakable ratings (catchers mostly).
Other players who played most of the career at one position don't seem have 200 experience level at the position.
It really changes the dynamic of the game, and i am not sure for the better.

I started with 3 Year and have moved to Career Fielding. 3 Year was kinda fun for a while as it forced me to constantly recycle my roster to stay on top. But I grew tired of it and now appreciate the simplicity and stability of Career Fielding. Whether I'm playing or just observing.

Do you have examples of Super Catchers or other weird stuff? I'd like to check that out if there's issues.

I remember Danny Tartabull being an elite fielding SS for over a decade

This is 1983 import (midseason) with career fielding.
Catchers screen shot
Pull in ANY season and you will see the same thing

Then someone like rick manning who played 70 games in LF gets no rating or experience for LF after import.
Someone like Alan Bannister (utillity player and not known for d) who played 70 career games in CF gets imported with 200 experience and and 68 out of 100 overall CF rating.
This is where all the 'odd' things will happen. ie Alan Bannister becomes starting CF, Dale Murphy is starting C.
Pick a season where you are familiar with players.

It feels like there needs to be tuning on import like you can with batting, pitching (ie accounting for someone that went 3 for 4)

I've only seen those wonky ratings when trying to use the historical minor leagues. The ratings in the Major League database seem ok. I've basically given up using the minor league database because I hate seeing (for example) Eric Davis in the Majors as a teenage shortstop. It's a shame because I like having all of those extra players.

Can you import 83 season.
KC plays Hal McCrae as 2B.
For some reason he imports as 2b with 178 experience when in real life he only played 17 games in majors as 2b. It also ignore his experience completely in RF and 3b.
I am not sure under what circumstances the game uses minor league stats. There doesn't seem to pattern that i can tell.

Always fun having BOB WATSON as a CATCHER when he played 2 career games there. He is 95 catcher

Just poke around you see all sort of stuff that does'nt make sense

If you select "import real Negro Leagues and minor leagues", and career fielding, you get the result you describe with Hal McRae. If you leave the "import minor leagues" box unchecked, and career fielding, McRae will only be given outfielder ratings. So if you don't want McRae as a secondbaseman, you can't play with real minor leagues.

I checked my recent save with historical fielding. Bob Watson is a 45 rated 1B and 35 rated LF, no rating at C.

All of your comments indicate there seems to be something wrong with your settings or save file, possibly from importing historical minors like others have said.

Hmmmm but i still see actual positions played in MAJORS NOT showing up (irregardless if minor leagues)
ie 83
Rick Manning missing his left field ratings

Now i wonder when i should import MINOR LEAGUES. I normally do that so i can have a more complete picture of player and quick see of the stats for all the players i never heard of (mostly minors that never made it to majors)

So here is 1983 No import of Minors:
Notice McCrae actually does have some games 2b,3rd, rf and cf
For some reason EXPERIENCE is 200 in each outfield position, which doesn't make sense. And not even a tiny bit of experience for the little he played INF.

Then Manning who has played LF has zero experience and no rating in LF.
Something seems off, at least not consistent

fredbeene, those shots are from OOTP21. We completely rebuilt fielding for the new game.

I also use the career ratings. The 3 Yr average just isn't flexible enough for any historical leagues if you are having an inaugural draft/a lot of trading.

If the 3 yr average had been a 5 YR average (or maybe 7 yr avg) instead - allowing more time to transition players to new positions & make appropriate transactions to cover - I think that might have been the sweet spot - and reflected the need to move players as they age.
