Brand new—Perfect Team…p2w?
Is playing Perfect Team without spending money viable?
How do I get Perfect Points without spending real $$$? Thanks! |

Build an iron tournament team (the players are really cheap). Then use that to get packs which will eventually yield players you can sell. This will get you the bronze team. Then just do tournaments for packs and slowly build your main team into a championship contender. With a little luck it shouldn’t take that long. Iron is all about having 3 teams going at the same time as everyone is running the same players (so it’s pretty random).

Yes, playing without spending money is quite viable. Playing at the highest level is even viable, though to be honest it requires a huge time investment (and know-how) instead of money.

Yeah I’m not worried about being the “best,” but competing on some lower level is what I was hoping for.

yeah, that is a good outlook to have. Competing at lower levels is definitely viable (I am F2P as well and as you can see have a couple low-level championships to my name already)

I've played every version of PT beginning with the open Beta many moons ago. I've never spent a dime. Of course, I loose interest by the tenth season, but so what? I have fun until then. Essentially hitting is EVERYTHING at lower levels. It is how you win and how you pile up the PP. Very few points available for pitching and fielding. Hitters go to the all-star game and get those points. Make your home park maxed out for hitting. That will get you PP almost every game. Don't worry about good fielding catchers. Guys who give up passed balls on third strikes might give you a 4 strikeout inning and 3000 PP. My teams jumped started this season with two of these per team in the early going. use the PP to complete missions. First you'll get a gold pack, then a nice player (except for Baltimore, where you get an ancient Brooks Robinson). Anyway, that's how I'm doing it and it worked all three times in Rookie ball last season.

winning does help generate PP, but not as much as previous years. They have nerfed achievement income pretty noticeably this year. Also, there is stricter enforcement against tanking, so I'm not sure that hanging out in lower levels is really the best strategy anymore.
The first step should absolutely be building an iron tournament team as mentioned above. The cost is near nothing and even if you don't know what you're doing should be able to generate some occasional pack rewards. If you DO know what you're doing you can pull in 15-20 packs a day from that. |

No worries, it's not a stupid question at all. The interface for building tourney rosters is...not very intuitive.
Basically you can't construct a roster until you actually enter a tournament. That is done from the home screen of OOTP from clicking the "view tournaments" button. From there you can filter down to the type you're looking for (iron cards in this case). What makes it annoying is that iron tournaments fill SUPER fast (like 1 minute or something) and once they fill, they go into "preparing" mode and while preparing, your roster changes won't stick. Once the preparation is done you will get a pop-up notification that the tournament is starting. There should be 10 minutes before the first game of the tournament. THAT is when to build your roster. If it takes more than 10 minutes don't worry - just hit "cancel" when the popup comes up asking you to download the update after game 1. It's better to just sacrifice one tournament in this fashion than to rush your roster building. When your roster is finalized how you like it, from the roster screen do the "export roster to file" option. Otherwise you risk losing all that work. Once exported, you can then easily import from that file next time. After a couple times doing that, you SHOULD find that the game is auto-importing that saved roster automatically if you keep entering the same type. Once you see that is working properly, it's hands-off, you only need to join tournaments and everything else is automatic. |

Since you are just starting out and entering for the first time, you will need to look at your Iron choices after the next re-evaluation of the MLB. Unless, of course, you are entering a 'No MLB' type of tourney, in which case you should be good.

Chazzycat, you deserve some kudos for an explanation as clear as that

Developing a couple of competitive low level tourney squads will generate far more revenue through packs and cards won than anything you can do through the ladders. Unless you are extraordinarily unlucky, anyway. Experiment with open, live, non-live and capped tourneys to see where you have most success.
The easiest way to fix a roster without time pressure is to first run one filled with anything eligible that you have. When you get eliminated, you can open it up from your tourney list with full access to the roster you used through 'RosterManagement' for as long as you like. Once you have changed it to what you want, set batting orders and so on, 'submit' it and save the roster via the import/export tab. Enter another tourney of the same type, and it should be there; if not just import the save. Saving is also useful if you make changes that are unsuccessful so you can easily revert to what you had before; just name the files appropriately. BTW, although the usual reason for tournament rosters being reset is MLB live cards that change value as Leo says, it's not the only one. You can still sell cards used in an active tournament, but the roster will reset once it ends. I've also had them reset for no apparent reason and I don't use live cards in tournaments at all. Always pays to save and check on occasion!
