Pitcher's demand 25% of current salary!!! (I signed him.)
It was half way through July 2002 and with a probable 6th or 7th place team (7 in division) I checked to see if I should trade any upcoming free agents who might be asking for big increases. Surprise!!!
SP Rick Reed age 37 was making $1,460,000. Demand was $356,160. He was 2.5 stars at that point so I said sure. I figured even if age got to him I wasn't out much.
He stayed in the rotation of a 84 win team in 2003 and stated 35 games with a 1.29 WHIP and 0.6 WAR. His demand for 2004 is $422,400. He wants 3 years but otherwise its super reasonable. He's still 2.5 stars.
And there was another! Jose Hernandez age 32 had been the starting SS in 1999 but lost that 2000 - 2002 and became the first IF off the bench. He was making $450.000 and asked for $407,040 for 2003. As with Reed I said yes without negotiation.
So it turned out my great field light hit starting SS lost his great field over the winter. Hernandez' ratings improved so come the 2003 season opening Hernandez was the starting SS. He turned in a .249 BA with 23 HRs and a 2.5 WAR performance.
This time around Hernandez wants $950,000 for three years. I'm going to negotiate that.
Anyway its interesting how players views of their value change. At least I thought so.
