Just got swept by the Mundys and it wasn't even close. Probably the only season my teams will see that one

For next week please add Edster007a, Sugar Hill Gang. The team is currently in Stone and likely to remain in Stone next week.
It is a theme team based on players who played for the four New York teams. The team is two roster spots away from being OL compliant but will not be theme compliant. The teams name comes from the Sugar Hill neighborhood in the Bronx which is just south of Coogans Bluff where the Polo Grounds was located. |

Hearing Sugar Hill brings back memories of listening to Art Rust Jr. and his various sports shows on the radio. He always talked about his growing up in Sugar Hill. I also remember Jack Spector doing sports on WMCA, the first station to go all talk. About once a week, Spector used to play nicknames. No prizes or anything, just folks calling up and chipping with old baseball nicknames. Rust also wrote a few fine books, including one on the Negro Leagues called, "Get that (N-word) Off the Field." The title came from a quote from the lips of Adrian "Cap" Anson, who refused to play against a team with a black player. Always disliked Anson since then and would not use him in Strat-O-Matic back in the day or in PT now. |

I have the Sugar Hill team listed as playing at the Polo Grounds, I think I may change it to the Big Ball Orchard in the Bronx- that is what Art Rust called Yankee Stadium. I heard many references to the book and looked to purchase it a long time ago. It wasn't easy to find then, except in first editions that were more than I wanted to pay. I may look into it again for some summer reading. |

Southpaws Sneak by Port Ruppert in OL R65
Cary took two-of-three from the visiting Mundys, giving them a suffcient margin to take the top spot in chase for the R65 crown. In game one, the Southpaws spoiled the debut of highly touted rookie Max Lanier, who matched zeroes with Cary's Chris Archer through the first seven frames, before allowing the home team to take a 1-0 lead into the ninth. Cary closer Wayne Twitchell surrendered the tying run in the top of the ninth, but the Southpaws sent the fans home happy when Kent Hrbek's two-out hit delivered a 2-1 victory.
In game two, Cary clobbered 13-game winner Irv Young, and then hammered three home runs off reliever Jim Hughes en route to a 13-1 shellacking of the visitors. Gio Gonzalez coasted to his first win of the season with help from Dock Ellis. Cary's Justin Verlander locked up with Dave Ferris in a pitching duel until both bullpens turned into fire starters. With the score 1-1 and Wes Ferrell replacing Verlander, Port Ruppert exploded for four runs in the top of the 8th. Mundy closer Scott Erickson nearly returned the favor after replacing Colby Janssen, who had gotten the final two outs in the home 8th after relieving Ferris. When Janssen allowed the first two Southpaws to reach base in the Cary 9th, Erickson came on to allow three run-scoring hits before finally salvaging game three, 5-4. The two front runners separated themselves a little from the rest of the contenders in July. Last edited by Stanley Kuppchaser; 04-09-2021 at 07:30 AM. |

Slight correction: Big ball orchard the South Bronx. I don't know if your remember the WMCA switch from the Top 40 Good Guys, but if you do, can you guess who was the last Good Guy? That is, the final one hired as a good guy, who was still there when they made the switch over. |

I stand corrected you are right. I don’t remember the switch over. I started on AM with WABC so I will guess Harry Harrison who was in the ABC lineup with Dan Ingram, Ron Lundy, Cousin Bruce and Chuck Leonard. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I remember Cousin Brucie got the Shirelles to record a part of "Tonight's the Night" for his theme song. The Good Guy answer is Alex Bennett. Remember Zacherly on FM? He also had Disc Go Teen TV show on channel 68. |

Annandale has very little news to report. Since I added the 91 Joe Cronin my team has played 500 ball. So he’s obviously not very good! Actually, he’s only hitting something like 230 so I scratch my head when I look at that card. But what can you do?
BOTS, hang in there pal. I know how horrible it feels when you’ve got a dry spell and nothings happening and your team is sitting there not looking very good. Just give it time and keep plugging away… That’s what I do. At least it keeps me busy! Last edited by Charlatan; 04-09-2021 at 12:01 PM. Reason: Autocorrect sucks |

Here we are in the second week (not counting Entry) and two of my three teams are in a "funk". It seems in this version, getting a team of Gold's isn't difficult (especially with the added benefits of Perfect Draft) but overcoming the difference in needed PPs to go from Golds (base price 1000) to Diamonds (base price 4000) is a stumbling block that could take weeks to overcome.
In any case, I have two teams in that bucket and one about to get the carpet pulled out from under it if it gets to Iron Level next week lol.

I was on the fence when I nabbed the 91 Ken Boyer in a pack. I finally decided to sell. There were no Boyer cards in the AH so I put him up with a slightly higher buy now than 7 day average for six hours and he sold quick. If there were multiples in the AH I probably would have kept him. |

The Mad Brewers got off to a great start in Stone .148 but have settled down to a more sane level. No moves so far during the season after the early pickup of a diamond Hugh Bedient (high movement deadball pitcher). Making the playoffs is nice but promotion to Iron looks like it will be rough.

He hosted a horror movie show, an off beat Vampire who's wife was in a coffin on the set. He was pretty damned funny. Being a New Yorker, do you have any recollection of the Uncle Floyd show? It was a UHF "kids" show. Absolutely seat of the pants and loaded with double entendres. He also had an Italian music show on radio in New York. |

This is the kind of stuff that makes me think we're spinning our wheels a lot for little traction. Take a look at Ted Wilks and Todd Worrell. Almost identical cards, Wilks rated 83, Worrell rated 86.
What can we conclude? 1) The OVR ratings should be closer (none of the other ratings are much different) 2) Based on my use of these players, Wilks is great - Worrell stinks. 3) The variations of what happens in a game are far greater than the ratings on a card (especially for Relief pitchers who pitch so few innings). So. Here I am trying to decide if there is anyone on the relief staff I can make an incremental change -and the bottom line there is no logical reason to pick one of these players over the other... Not bitching here, by the way, just frustrating that the ratings we spend so much effort on - in the end - have very little to do with what happens on the field. So, I guess for now I don't do anything with these two players - until I can replace them with someone who is head and shoulders above them.
