3D animations suggestions

The animations in the 3D engine have obviously come a long way, and I like watching and playing out games more and more using it. Previously I primarily used the 2D engine and read the text, which was immersive in its own right. But the animations have improved significantly over the last few versions, and this year is another step in the right direction.

Watching the games on opening day last night I noticed several differences that could make the 3D experience in OOTP even more immersive.

- In real life a ball sometimes falls between the infielders and outfielders. This may or may not result in a base hit. Sometimes a fielder is in time to throw out the runner, many times the fielders are too late. In OOTP the 'in betweener' is reflected as a 'normal' base hit. It would be an improvement in immersion if the fielders are sometimes able to pick up the ball in time to throw out the runner, and other times won't make it to first base in time (or even throw the ball away in an attempt to throw out the runner).

- the same applies to wild pitch situations. A wild pitch in real life might lead to the runner moving up. But in other situations it does not. It depends on the speed of the runner, the reaction speed of the catcher and pitcher and so on. In the game a wild pitch always leads to the moving up of the runner. It would be nice if this would sometimes be the case, other times not.

- A third example can be seen in a double play situation. After the runner at second base is tagged out, the fielder in OOTP decides to not throw the ball to first if he 'thinks' he can't throw out the runner at first. In real life the attempt is often made anyway, sometimes leading to an out, sometimes to a throwaway (or bad handling of first baseman) and sometimes simply being too late.

These are examples that would make watching and playing out games in the 3D engine a little less predictable and more like watching a real life baseball game. There are a lot more examples to think of, like a ball that hits the fence and sometimes results in a double, sometimes in a single and sometimes the runner is thrown out, or a badly handled ball still resulting in an out. In other words: a wider variety of possible outcomes in general.

It's not counted as a wild pitch if the runner doesn't advance (or is thrown out trying to advance). But the runner being thrown out in that situation has never been in the game, and I don't expect it to be added at this point, although I agree it should be.

I agree in that it is not scored as a wild pitch when the runner doesn't advance, but wild pitches -blocked by the catcher or the ball not getting away far enough- where the runner doesn't advance occur all the time in real life. That is what I was referring to. Runners being thrown out in wild pitch situation doesn't happen in OOTP, true.

I think certain scenarios in 3D (in all aspects of the game) should be looked at to make more possible outcomes available.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think it's likely this is in the game. If so, you would need to play out each at bat in pitch-by-pitch mode to ever see it. In one pitch mode, you wouldn't ever see this.

I would like to recommend making the camera slightly less "herky-jerky" in follow ball mode. The camera movement seems much more abrupt and frenetic in this version compared to '21.

I'm fairly sure that a runner trying to advance on a ball that gets away but getting thrown out isn't in the game, and you would see that in one pitch mode because it results in an out.

Yeah, that makes sense, but it might just also be (too) rare. I'm not really sure, to be honest. Perhaps Matt will weigh in if/when he sees this.

To be fair, the animation for a failed double play does exist, it's just really rare. I was gonna comment earlier about it but wasn't sure when the last time I had saw one was. As it happens though I'm playing out one right now where it happened, so great timing. The bases were loaded, the batter hit it right in front of the pitcher, it was thrown home for one out and to prevent the run, but then then the batter was safe when the follow up throw to first happened.

If that situation is reflected in the game, that's great to hear. There are definitely more animations than in past versions.

But the double play situation in which a fielder throws to first base and not get the out (because he was late) I haven't encountered yet. Maybe it's in there but just haven't seen it so far.

I'm pretty sure the standard out at 2nd, late to 1st is in the game, in version 21 even, I just can't say it with 100% certainty that I've seen it. Indeed probably a bit too rare though.

Yeah, I've definitely seen it, although not that often.

I actually saw 1-5-3 double play the other day and it surprised me that it was in the game.

Speaking of plays which may or may not be in the game, I've wondered for a while if the 9-3 putout is in the game. It should be stupidly rare, but it definitely should be there.

The batter should run through first base, not disappear of he's out. I want to feel more like I'm watching a game, not reading text.
