I found Merrill pictured here as a member of the 1883 Fort Wayne baseball team featured in the March 31, 1923 Fort Wayne Sentinel. Many other big league players were also on this roster.

As a follow up, the photo is most likely of the 1883 club, based on newspaper coverage of the club. There was no 1887 Fort Wayne club, so the newspaper had it wrong.

There is an outside chance that another missing player, Phil Coridan, might be in the photo, but he only seems to have been with the club in 1882.

Thanks for digging deeper! I suspected the year was incorrect when the roster matched earlier teams and I couldn't find a team listing for 1887.

Thanks, cinemaodyssey, for the find of missing player Ed Merrill. The discovery is a double winner, since he was also a missing umpire, having been a man in blue in 1884. I see that the Site Administrator has already struck his name from the Missing Umpires List.

For all those clamoring for a photo of Paul Russell in a baseball uniform, I found a nice team photo of the 1895 Chattanooga squad that pictures Russell. He is in the September 18, 1938 Chattanooga Daily Times.

The small head shot of Spencer Heath on his Baseball-Reference.com record shows his face better than in this photo, but this one has the advantage of a better view of the White Sox uniform. He was only a 4-game major leaguer, so it seemed worthwhile posting. It was displayed on the Facebook page of Jay Gauthreaux.
