"finalists were narrowed down to the Spartanburgers, Sluggers and Conductors."

Ah yes, obviously the best choice.

As I am not a fan of mononyms, I would have preferred they gone with the Sparkle City Spartanburgers

But at least it's not the Grrrrreenville Grrrrrowl

Robo knows what I'm talking about

Minor League teams are getting goofy with their nicknames.

I know I'm an old codger, but I still prefer typical nicknames like the good old days... Wind Surge, Trash Pandas, Biscuits, Baby Cakes, Y'alls... are not for me.

Naw... not into Spartanburgers.

"Mud Hens" has actually had 125 years to grow on people. Maybe Trash Pandas will too after that long.

Good observation, cephasjames.

Made this old codger think a bit.

Unfortunately, there is some precedent for goofy names. Just a quick glance at Baseball Reference and we'll see some odd ones. This is just from the first four states listed alphabetically.

1935 Bentonville Officeholders
1934 Fayetteville Educators
1909 Newport Pearl Diggers
1956 Bakersfield Boosters
1910 Heraldsburg/San Leandro Grapevines
1910 Oakland Invaders/Merced Fig Growers

I don't like any of these and I like almost none of the new ones. Like EC, I prefer more traditional ones.

EDIT: Just saw this one and felt it needed to be added.

1912 Canon City/Raton Swastikas

You could make the case, given how long ago these teams played, that they are "traditional" nicknames

Point is, unusual minor league team names have been around forever, usually as a point of local pride for the communities. If all teams drew from a list of 100 or so "approved" nicknames, things would be boring.

So says the proud Tar Heel.

There are a few teams prior to Hitler's rise who went by this name Prior to WWII it was a common symbol meaning "good luck"

Evansville Otters

Speaking of Otters... The Evansville Otters of the Frontier League announced their first new logo since the team's inception in 1995

As an otter enthusiast, I prefer Evansville's logo

I love otters because they're cute. And the Evansville logo is cute. The Danville logo is just...hard. And metallic
