MY LIFE IN 1954
EC's Scoring More in '54 EC is now 14... coming of age little by little... actually EC was scoring a little more in '54... we are in the last month of the 8th grade... life is good in Mobile... maybe the best year of my life so far... loving sports... watching the Mobile Bears and Southern Association baseball at Hartwell Field... seeing some good movies... and enjoying the hits of 1954 on the radio and on my record player... learning a little bit about Jesus at Central Baptist Church and my gal pals, Judy and Margie, and best friend Richard... hanging out at the malt shop with all the cool 8th graders after school... then heading to Galvez playground to play whatever sport is in season... life was a breeze for EC. For most of the year I was Judy's boyfriend off and on... sometimes I was her number-one guy... sometimes it was Carl Vernon Smith... sometimes at night I would head over to her house... I would ride my bike over to her house on Monroe Street... we would sit on her front porch in a swing and just talk... and maybe sometimes hold hands... her little sister would chaperone us... usually she would get tired of being with us and being ignored and go inside... now it was time for EC to make his move... only problem was EC didn't know enough about girls to make his move... fortunately, Judy was experienced and help me out... she gave EC his first lessons in making out and smooching... it was simple hugs and short sweet kisses... just on the lips... it was April, 1954 when EC was enlightened about real "making out"... it happened at Jackie Boutwell's party... Jackie liked boys and showed it... she was a flirt and a little agressive if she took a liking to you... yeah, she liked EC... but my heart belonged to Judy at the time... we were playing "Spin the Bottle" and it pointed at Jackie on my turn... we went out on the porch... none of us would kiss with anyone around... I took her in my arms and lightly kissed her lips... that's all I knew to do... "that night" and "that kiss" was my first time to be "French kissed"... Jackie started using her tongue in ways I had never known... Wow! ... it scared the heck out of EC! ... I was too shocked to enjoy it... I quickly broke her passionate embrace, escaped with my integrity and morals still intact, thank goodness, and sheepishly went back inside... and stayed clear of Jackie Boutwell and her overactive lips the rest of the evening... later on in the summer in Sheffield, I would slightly and enthusiastically expand my knowledge of how to kiss properly in the fashion of the French... more about that later.
