I usually do, especially for pitchers, and always for someone who missed more than two weeks. Even if it's just for a couple games or a start, I like them to come back to the majors with a little work in on rehab to knock off any rust.

I will nearly always send a player for rehab assignment. Even if just for 2-3 games.

For a field player, if they are only out 10-14 days and are a starter, I will bring them right back if they are needed. Anything longer than 2 weeks, I send them for 3-4 days usually unless it was a long injury or the player isn't a starter.
For a starting pitcher, anytime they are on the DL, I give them a minimum of 1 start in the minors. I check how many innings they threw in that start and make my decision. Often if they have been out for over a month, they are on a pitch limit and only throw 4 innings and I give those players multiple starts. For a RP, if it's only 2-3 weeks, I usually bring them right back because it could take 5+ days in the minors before they even get in a game. I've found it usually makes no difference for them. However, if they've been out more than a month, I always give them a week or so. In general, it's always a shorter rehab stint for key players and a longer one for a bench player. |

It seemed lots of times when I brought someone back without rehab he got injured again right away. Since I've been sending them on rehab they instead get injured in AAA!!!
Seriously though, I've been using rehab almost all the time recently. Sometimes I'll bring back a star position player right away in a tight pennant race. However sometimes there's no question about bringing such a player back since the minor league season ends before the major league season. |
