An MLB rule on bringing players up

There used to be an MLB rule, I don't know about now, that if a team brings a players up from the Minors, the player has to be on the roster for at least 2weeks. Has that changed? If not, have I missed an option in OOTP to enforce the rule?

I think it's the opposite. If you send a player to the minors, they must remain in the minors for 10 days before they can be called back up, unless they are an injury replacement.

Is there an option in OOTP to enforce the rule? If not, why not?

To my knowledge you can’t enforce it

and I imagine the reason the game does it that way is the coding would be too hard....my wild crazy totally wrong answer lol

I would like to see this rule incorporated into OOTP....and also the waiver rule where you either have to trade or release a player.

are you talking about the DFA rule? bc there is a 3rd option to outright a player to the minors once they clear waivers. so it's not trade or release only.

AFAIK in real life, after a player has been DFA'd once he then has the right to become a FA the next time he is DFA'd. No matter what his roster/option status.

I try to enforce it as a house rule to avoid having a pseudo-taxi squad. I look at a recently optioned player's last appearance in MLB and then try to follow the guideline regarding only promoting within ten days due to an IL worthy injury on the big league roster.

This is what I was thinking of....it would be nice if OOTP modeled this.

The logic that would need to be coded tho? Bc it's not automatic. It is the player's choice.

My understanding is that coding this accurately is exceedingly difficult.

Also the 10 day rule mentioned earlier which can be waived due to injuries at MLB level is just as difficult. One wrong piece of code could crash the game.

"coding this accurately is exceedingly difficult."

As a long-time coder that sounds to me a lot like "you want us to do whaaat?"

There would need to be a field in every player's record indicating the last time he was demoted to the minors, then if promoted to MLB within 10 days, at the least, a prompt could appear stating that it would violate league rules if the promotion is not to replace an injured player, so "do you want to proceed?" In an online league the commissioner could be alerted and his confirmation would be required. What's so hard about that?

Here's the thing, as I understand it. The ten-day rule doesn't prohibit players from being called back up before ten days. People have pointed out earlier that players will be recalled due to injury before the ten days are up (and sometimes even when they have been optioned down but haven't actually reported to the minor league club yet (a sort of "not so fast, we might need you so stick around" sort of thing.

My understanding is that the ten day rule is in place purely because of service time. If a player is sent down, and then called back up to the major league squad before ten days is up, he accrues service time as though he had never left in the first place. It's a rule to prevent the team from playing games and getting another year of team control at the cost of a few days in the minors. The rule has to do with service time, no more, no less.

Teams are free to put players on the AAA shuttle, but they'll be paid and earn service time as though they were always with the big league club.

This I could see being do-able in OOTP-land.

Now, if the rule truly means an option player cannot be recalled within 10 days (save for exceptions), then that's definitely something only online leagues could implement.

The rule on position players is 10 days. For pitchers it's 15 days, and it's to prevent teams from streaming pitchers, i.e., sending down tired pitchers with options and bringing up fresh ones on a continual basis.

None of this argues against simply prompting users or alerting commissioners to a potential violation of MLB rules. All that's needed is an additional field in the player history record, and programming a check against the game date.

Btw

BTW, this issue has arisen for me because all of my starters are fatigued, as are my relievers that have any endurance. So I'm wondering if it's legal in the MLB to put a pitcher on Designated for Assignment for several days just so I can bring up a minor leaguer to fill in until my rotation recovers. (I'm playing solo, so I think the game will let me do it regardless, but I'd rather not.)
