Strange Free Agent Signing

I saw Petterson was a 2027 Free Agent with a current and potential 5 star rating. He was asking $14M over 6 years. I couldn’t afford that with my $81.5M Flyers cap. He signed for $6M and 6 years with NYR. The game doesn’t even allow me to make an offer, only “get a response” to my lower offer. How did he settle for less than half his asking price? Why can’t we offer deals like that?

How good is your GM rated? Players also have preferences for going to places as well.

I am the GM and manager. How does that affect my ability to offer whatever I want to a player? My only option was to meet his asking price or something very close. He settled for $6M with another team when he was asking $14M. How do I get the option to offer a fraction of the asking price?

Your skills play a part of how much a player is willing to change their offer. It may not be as big of a break as that, but it will make a difference.

What was your team budget? You can't offer more than your budget allows, and if the player wants more than you can offer, he will sign elsewhere, sometimes even for less since your "offer" isn't active.

It only occurs on random players. I can try to sign player 1, but the offer screen won’t allow me to make adjustments. If I move to player 2, everything is fine. It just seems to me that it is a game issue to prevent or slow down who I can try to get.

That is true but the screen won’t even let me change the offer or meet the demand or make adjustments. Just imagine working on the offer screen and all the gray boxes don’t work. I don’t have any cash or other limits - I just cannot make the offer. The game won’t allow it.

Then you're not controlling something or something has went wrong. Post screenshots of you interacting with a free agent. Post your Manager > Options. Let's see everything. And if you can't do that, Upload your save. Instructions can be found here.
