Playoff Formats - Ideas, Photos, and Experiences
Hi, All LONG Time player of OOTP Dating back to 2014,
I have been working from a save that's just as old and we have entered a new Century at 2200, Expansion is easy enough but I would love some examples of expanding the playoffs: [My Vison is expanding the Wild Card by two Rounds with 6 - They Play each other, and the Two Finalists move on to play against the Divison Winners in the Divison, Leauge, and World Series] My Hope is to see if I can Generate some nice "Dark Horse" scenarios, and add even more depth and history to my awesome experience. |

Could you post some setup pics and maybe a showcase of yours? I'd just need a tad of hand-holding for sure so I can adjust when I want to expand again and again.
Thanks for the feedback! |

This is my Playoff format, I have 3 Division winners the top 2 get byes with 3 Wild Cards. Worst Division winner verse last Wild card and WC1 vs WC2.
It does create a lot more Dark horses tho yes the screen shot of 2020 playoffs has no surprises. |

What I did for expansion to 32 teams:
NL East NL West AL East AL West 8 teams per division. In each league you will have 2 division winners. They go straight to LDS. 4 wild card teams will play best of 3 to join them. 12/32 is a decent ratio for playoffs. Like the NFL did before 2020. And the bye becomes critical to avoid a short series and the inherent randomness. But its also hard to get with 8 team divisions. Seems like a good compromise between giving lots of teams something to play for late into the season but heavily rewarding the best performers over 162. |

This is my playoff format. I have 30 teams, two leagues, two divisions in each. Brewers and Senators (Nationals) in the AL, Astros in NL.

That's basically the Korean playoff format. I've started using best of five for round 2.

I thought about duplicating this myself but how well does that work in a 2 subleague with 10 team playoff teams?

I went with the old NBA style. 8 teams in (3 division winners and 5 wildcards), along with a 5-7-7-7 playoff.
When I expanded enough, I went to 4 divisions in each league (East, North, Central and West) and changed it to 4 division winners and 4 wild cards. Not imaginative I know, but works for me |

My issue with that was always a watered down World Series. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Nothing revolutionary here. I have a two sub league set up with two, seven team divisions. (80’s baseball setup). The key is having a 14 team sub league regardless of how you split the division up. That allows for a 156 game balanced schedule. I then use custom playoff option to have the top 2 teams record wise from each sub league qualify for the playoffs regardless of the division they play in, in that sub league. You may be wondering why bother with divisions at all then? I like the look of regional divisions and I think it makes for a good storyline when a division is shut out of the playoffs fox x amount of years.

My usual style of league is 3 divisions in each subleague. With 24 teams (2 leagues of 3 divisions of 4) I just do division winners and one wildcard. For 36 teams (2 leagues of 3 divisions of 6) I do top 2 in each division and 2 wildcards.
