Current and Potential ratings often the same
I'm still fairly new to this and I'm struggling with why so many of my young players have the same Potential ratings as their Current ratings. I have Scouting turned off, if that helps. For instance, I have the #9 prospect in the minors, a 19-year old SS and his Contact and Power ratings are the same for current and potential. Is there something wrong with my setup? Considering his age, his ratings are already pretty solid (49 for Contact, 58 for Power, 1-100 scale), and maybe he ends up never getting better, but he'd have to be expected to improve, right? I see it with so many young hitters in my league, but maybe these are just outliers.

I'm guessing that a shortstop who is the #9 prospect, especially with those fairly league average hitting ratings, is a gifted defensive player.
Sure he might get some bumps in those hitting ratings, but likely what you are describing is a player whose hit tool is mostly developed to potential, and that potential is not spectacular, but who plays a premium defensive position extremely well (and perhaps has some other skills that factor into his prospect ranking- is he very fast and a skilled base-stealer and/or base runner?, what about his eye rating?, etc.) Also, depending upon what his Avoid K rating is, there might be some indication that he could exceed his contact rating, or at least maximize it. A shortstop doesn't have to be a great hitter to be a great prospect. And a shortstop with great power is a rare commodity, so the fact that he is even somewhat above league average in this category is encouraging. We would have to know far more about this player to give you a very knowledgeable response to this, but these are some things to consider.

Thanks BirdWatcher, that explanation makes a lot of sense.
