When to Call These Players up?

Both of these players have stopgaps ahead of them. Both in different OOTP online leagues. Both teams are competitive and calling them up, in theory, would improve both teams' chances. Thoughts? I think I can let the latter marinate a bit longer as he is happy and only at a "40". Might be higher once I get an updated scouting report for both.

First thing I would do is invest in scouting, whether it's increasing the scouting budget or hiring a better scout. There's no reason the report accuracy on players in your system should be average in the middle of the season.

That said, based on ratings, I wouldn't call up the CF unless the current CF on the big league team is awful defensively. As for the pitcher, I'd call him up if he's a clear improvement from whoever he'd replace in the rotation.

But, the caveat is that both are performing well in Triple-A and their ratings can't really be trusted with their scouting reports just average. Their stats in Triple-A suggest both are ready.

Using the ootopcalculator.com gives a pretty clear picture that they would both struggle if called up but ignores their AAA performances. Not sure if their performance at that level has any bearing on how their success would translate to the majors and might do better than their ratings imply.

I'm posting just as their about to go through scouting again. I try to keep a filter set of anyone average or less accuracy and check it every sim to run them through again if anyone falls to that level. Though possible I'm not spending as much on scouting as I should. Bigger market teams have double the scouting budgets I have and double the developmental yet I'm right on the borderline of red/black in my budget

Hard to say as I've found the talent pool is widely different between online leagues. In some leagues 45 Contact might tread water, but in other leagues it most certainly will mean batting below the Mendoza Line. Nice stats in AAA are a positive indicator though.

But I would echo what others have said, and spend more money on scouting. In fact I max scouting and development budget in all leagues. It's really the only way to compete as a small market team, and as a large market team you can afford it anyway.

$60 million is a big chunk of change, but I consider it as locked away and work within the remaining budget. That basically means only players on min. salary or arbitration.

Thanks, I'll try that. I think I'm at just over one-third of that in combined scouting/development budgets. I'll have to cut payroll over the next few seasons to get there and it may take awhile, but that is the fun of it all. Journey before destination and what not.

Are there stopgaps in LF/RF? If not, you could make him play one of those positions a bit in AAA then bring him up.

All three of my outfield spots are an open competition pretty much.

My general question is - given both players age, should I simply be letting them marinate another season at least? Or in everyone else's experience, does that not matter/all players are different and you can't apply "age" as a call-up criteria universally.

If you need help in the OF right now, feel free to call him up. He's already on your 40 man so it doesn't hurt to do it.

As for the SP, he's only in his 3rd year after being drafted so you have time before you're forced to add him to the 40 man and start his clock. I would hold off unless you absolutely need him this season.
