2D Engine Discussion/Questions/Suggestions A single forum for posts about the new 2D match engine. so we can keep that better-organized. Bug reports should still go in the regular Technical Support/Bug Reports forum, but if you're not sure if something is a bug, either forum is fine.

2D stuff

First, great first effort.

I agree with others that moving the puck off of the puck carrier would help. Probably names too. I know my guys but no idea about opponent.

Game play - VERY little play along the boards. Virtually no one clears one off the boards out of the zone. Not ONE pass from D to D behind the net, or wrapping one around the boards. Almost everything is between the dots.

It seems to be mostly possession. Little time where the puck isn't on someone. Weird stuff that's unrealistic with regards to player actions and the puck. One time three guys gathered in the corner and waited for the puck to get there.

Players are damn fast going to and from bench, but pretty slow moving up ice with the puck.

Lots of bad idea passes side to side right through an offensive player in the D zone.

Very few play stoppages for puck leaving the ice. I saw a couple icings and offsides so that was ok. Also annoying player kicked out of face off circle!

So, yes, there is a ways to go to get it flowing more like a real hockey game, but no blatant craziness.

Visuals - The penalty clock, white on white is near impossible to see. Box score the scroll/slider on right is black on black. Hard to use.

This is good feedback, I hope they work on these things. It's a great effort, but when you start to look closely, there's a lot of things which need tweaking and polish.

Keep the feedback coming, but also keep in mind this is the 1st attempt by Jeff, Sebastian and Adam(very small team compared to the OOTP gang) at a 2D engine. It's going to take time to really get this to where Jeff wants it.

All good. I give them credit for where it is. Just adding what I hope is constructive criticism to help them along.

Yeah, we'll definitely be working at improving these sorts of things. Some of what you're describing is stuff I've been adjusting for a while - the tendency to avoid the boards, for example, has gotten a lot better over the last month or so, but the players still don't spread out as much as I want.

Jeff, would it help to have a separate section for 2D comments. So people could drop in things they see that aren't a bug really but just something that doesn't seem realistic?

Next game - I noticed this first game but forgot to post, teams don't switch ends in second period! We need the long change. Same in OT.

Players don't change often enough. On time I noted Lafreniere out there for a long long time. When I checked stats after the 1st period, he had 2 shifts and 5:56 of playing time. I notice players don't dump it in and go off, or just go off because they were caught deep and it's now back at center ice.

The puck seems to "stick" to the boards. It doesn't deflect, or go around the corner or even bounce off.

Too much of players facing each other in the zone and nothing happening. I guess it's letting other things happen but there should be some movement.

Yeah, not a bad idea, I'll get something set up overnight.

I would like to have the ability of a smaller rink size. This way I can see the entire rink and possibly have stat boxes surrounding the rink. Right now, it's just a rink and scoreboard....no line displays, etc (unless I'm missing something).

I also think the rink is too big in relation to the players. When they are skating "across" the ice it seems to take forever to get from point A to B.

Skating is definitely slow even on "normal" and not a lot of board play.

I'd be all in on that, like being able to have the Eat'n'Park ads or the diamond center ice line from the old Civic/Mellon Arena for the retro Penguins.

Pretty sure they've said modding for rinks and player icons is coming soon.

I tried out game play with the 2D rendering for the first time today. Right off the bat the developers have provided lots of useful options for controlling speed of the game, enabling, for example, normal speed, then quick, then back to normal, etc. It works quite well, not perfectly at this point, but very well.

We don't have options like showing highlights/extended highlights like Football Manager yet, but I expect we will see that in the future.
