arbitration

Is it cheaper to extend a players contract prior to arbitration? or is it cheaper to go thru arbitration?

Pre-arb contracts

It can be cheaper in the long run to sign players to longer contracts pre arbitration but is risky because they could get injured or not live up to their potential in which case they wouldn't have made as much in arbitration. It's a gamble but if they end up being superstars it could really pay off.

Also in real life my understanding is by the time some of the upcoming rookies become arbitration eligible it would be under the new agreement between the players union and the MLB which is predicted to be less club friendly when it comes to compensation for up and coming players. So teams may want to sign players now to guaranteed deals that could end up costing less than future arbitration. I could be wrong on that though

It varies, but it is usually cheaper in the long run, if you can extend the player for more than 1 season. For only 1 season, I find the player usually wants what he is asking for in arbitration anyway, so it makes more sense to try to get him cheaper in arbitration.

The answer to most questions in OOTP have "if" in them.

A young player could turn into Barry Bonds or Chris Davis.
