Okay, so what gives with this?

So, I'm just casually browsing one of my saves "all MLB players" page, looking for stats, because stats are cool. So I start sorting highest strikeout totals, when I see that this one guy on the Astros has a -5.2 WAR season going with like 200 something strikeouts. I was like, "wow that's a lot of WAR lost, this must be a guy who's like a Rookie league, who glitched his way to the majors". Nope, Angel Romero looks like a decent enough regular to hold down a keystone position.

He's batting terribly with a 44.5% strikeout percentage (double last year's total), with a -25.4 UZR, while biffing 12% of the routine balls hit at him, while still starting. He has positive defensive ratings at 2B, how is he this bad?

Well, I look into this guy, and sort by most war lost in the league up to that point.

Well, the Astros also got this guy:

A Shortstop by the name of Ron Beaudoin, who is putting up AN EVEN WORSE SEASON with a -5.9 WAR, dudes got a -35.4 UZR, has 28 errors, biffs over 25% of the routine plays hit his way and strikes out at a 39.5% clip (16% higher than last season), while still getting full playing time.

The Astro's middle infielders are putting up a combined -11.1 WAR.

My question is, why are these guys getting playing time? Heck, why are these guys so bad? Like Beaudoin is only 28, Romero is 31. Romero also put up a 5.6 WAR season like 2 years ago.

The Astro's team slash is a .225/.294/.397 which is pathetic and would get you DFA'd. Romero and Beaudoin are 5th and 6th on the team in regards to average.

What is up with the AI, more off what is wrong with the ratings? Why are these guys striking out at more than 20% more than last season?

It's a whole new approach to roster construction ...

... to destroy baseball from within.

I have no idea

I would

1) look at the players' stats in the editor to see if something is wrong there
2) look at other teams to see if this problem is limited to the Astros

I don't know after thst

What kind of contracts are they on? Do they have option years? Can they refuse demotion?

In my experience, the AI seems quite unwilling to release guys on big contracts even if they are terrible.

Though you say their ratings are fine, so they should be doing better. If the AI is set to consider mostly ratings and not current year stats, that could be another reason they don't get DFA'd

The bolded, highlighted part (mine) makes me think of the Detroit Tigers and Miguel Cabrera. Maybe not terrible exactly- or not all the time- but same principle. If the AI does this, and I suspect you are right that it does, that does seem to mirror MLB quite well for the most part.

The problem, I don't think, is the AI.

Or the main problem, at least

It's that players with those ratings are performing so poory

So that first guy, Romero is on a 27.6 million dollar contract, so I guess I could see him not getting DFA'd or released, but not benched? I don't know

The second guy, Beaudoin, is on a minimum salary contract and has 1 option year left. No idea why they sold out on him
