Starter stamina and hook level
What settings are you guys using for pitcher stamina/SP hook? I just got the new version (yeah I'm cheap plus I was finishing off a legendary career of a player in the 2020 game that finished with 850 HRs) and the starters are pitching WAY too long. I keep pushing back the hook and I'm at -4 now, one above "very quick" and I'm still seeing guys giving up 3 and 4 runs and pitching 125 pitches. A quick glance through 4 other teams show 2 and 3 starters per team averaging 100 pitches per game plus.
that seems high to me when in 2018 for example, the Indians (with some good starters) had the highest average starter P/g at 97. in 2019 10 teams were between 90 and 95, with the rest all below 90 pitches on average per game for starters. edited to add it's worse than I thought. I never paid attention to CG leaders in OOTP 20 because no one ever had more than 1 or 2 tops. But I noticed that Shane Bieber has 9 CGs in 18 starts already and plenty of others have 5 or more CGs. Is your bullpen tired? I think they might ignore your hook setting if the bullpen is at risk of not being able to finish the game. Or possibly if there is no rested long reliever available (in earlier innings), although maybe they would use a middle reliever if no long reliever was available. You can also set a secondary role of long reliever for a middle reliever in case the normal long reliever is tired.
If you are setting the individual player strategy hook settings, make sure your team hook settings aren't set for long hooks in some situations. I don't have these issues because I set pitch counts and usually have a 4 man rotation, so that could be an option too. |

What I did notice is the modifier for starter stamina was at 1.219, which seemed way to high if I understand how modifiers work. I thought I had started the season with settings to make the game play like 2020 baseball (minus the 60 game schedule and expanded playoffs) but maybe I didn't. Anyway, I put the modifiers back on default, which put it at 1.000 (along with everything else) and after one day of scores, I looked at all the teams. Much better. Not a single CG and most SPs were between 85-105 pitches if they had a somewhat decent day. So I will continue with the very quick hook setting for starters and the 1.000 modifier on starter stamina and see how it plays league wide going forward As of now I generally play my games all the way through unless we get trashed early and I get frustrated, then sim. But that has resulted in some real beatings for starting pitchers (7-9 runs in 4 or 5 innings when it was time to pull the plug earlier) |
