Am I missing something on fielding ratings?

I have a player whose base position is 3rd base. His rating at 3rd is a 93 with ratings of Range:82, Error:91, Arm:87 DP:79. He is only rated a 42 second baseman.

My second baseman has ratings of 63/80/46/62 lower than player A in literally every rating, however his second base rating is a 69 compared to the other player's 42.

I thought it might just be an odd rating and player A would out perform player B at second base in the long run, but so far player A always has a worse zone rating and more errors. I don't think it has to do with training because I have checked multiple copies of each card and that seems to be their default second base rating. Should I continue to start player A over player B at second because it will regress to the mean, or is there a part of defensive ratings that I am not understanding.

A player's positional rating is a combination of heir defensive ratings and experience.

Sounds like your player doesn't have much experience at 2B. With more experience their positional rating should rise.

Can you train them in the season and use that increase for tournaments?

No, cards used in tournaments just use the card's base fielding stats - they don't include any gains from position training.

Looks like I am out of luck then as far as having him as a viable tournament second baseman

Today I noticed I couldn't put an infielder into the outfield.

I had assumed the game used the typical position spectrum, but it won't even let me put a good fielding secondbaseman in left.

OOTP has anti-tanking measures in place that prevents you from playing players that drastically out of position. An infielder needs good outfield component ratings to train well in the OF, and an OF needs good infield component ratings to make the transition into the diamond.

How do you know when a player has reached his maximum fielding rating at a certain position?

In other words, when can I stop training at a new position because he will never get any better?
