Minor Leagues

I live in NC and we don't have a major league BB team. A case could be made we don't have a major league team in any sport but that's for another discussion . Anyway I thought I would try my hand at managing the Asheville Tourists (the closest minor league team to me). On a average of every two days the parent club (Rockies) take 7-9 players from me and send about the same. After 18 days I had zero players from opening day. Right now I have 7 SS and no 1B,3B or CF and only one LF and RF. So I have SS's playing those 3 positions. I also have only 2 pitchers with the stamina to be real starters. I find it hard that in real life they would move 64 players a week at one club! I would think if you wanted to destroy a young player there is probably no better way than having him play for a different manager, pitching/batting coach in a different location with different teammates every 3 or 4 days. That said I haven't followed real BB in decades and I figure a lot of you do, so is that many roster moves realistic?

Well I went back into the game and they swapped out 23 players over a 3 day period. Is there a setting that well damp that down to a more realistic level?

It's not realistic; I havent tried for a few years so maybe this has gotten worse. In real life, at AA and A things stay pretty quiet (absent major league or AAA injuries) until Memorial Day or so, then if anyone is tearing it up they'll usually get promoted. Around July 4, there will be a shakeup and several guys will be promoted/demoted. Then at the end of the year, some phenoms might get bumped up a level as a stunt, reward, or to goose rosters for the playoffs.

I had fun managing a minor team before but there wasn't THAT much change. I never let the AI run my minors so I don't know if this has gone back to the bad old days of prior versions. Sounds like it, and there have been multiple posts lately complaining about thin minor leagye pitching staffs.

I trashed that game and started over to see if the same thing happens.

A couple things to try.

1.) Give your minor league teams a larger roster size (around 35 players).

2.) Turn on "Allow incomplete minor league rosters (ghost players) and then set the Roster AI with incomplete minors to be "Match players to levels based on skills".

The larger roster sizes mean your game/team should have enough players so that you don't actually need to use Ghost Players. Matching players to levels based on skills and not requiring them to completely fill every roster should allow the AI to leave players where they belong instead of constantly moving them around to accommodate specific roster requirements.

On my second attempt in the first 30 days I had 107 roster moves! Rain King I couldn't find any place to edit roster size or match players skill levels but I did allow incomplete rosters. When I started the game up in the first 3 days there was 39 roster moves. OOTP needs to fix this or quit claiming that you can play a minor league team.

Are you using the Real Roster set?

Unfortunately, with a custom roster like that (instead of a game generated roster) the AI is going to have a flurry of moves at the beginning. However, it should settle in after the first week or so. Do you continue to see a large number of transactions as you move along during the season?

Another thought I just had. You could use the Roster Function "Run Computer Manager On All Teams" before taking over a minor league team. This will set things up to the AI's liking (instead of the roster creator's liking) and could prevent the barrage of moves at the beginning of the season.

Actually I did figure out how to change the roster size. I gave up after 10 days and 72 roster moves on the last try. I may try again and see if it settles down after a month or so.

O.K. I started back up with mostly standard defaults and simmed thru the whole season. This is how many roster changes per month:
April 132
May 66
June 71
July 48
August 29
and the 5 days in Sept. - 9

Now the team won the first half and the whole season and the division and the overall ! To bad I had nothing to do with as I NEVER even looked at or tried to set the pitching rotation or batting order. Totally unenjoyable! I hope they fix this in the next version as it was one of the main reasons I bought the game. However judging from the lack of activity on this thread I'm guessing few people here care about the minors so the powers to be probably don't care.

That's a good suggestion.

As I said I didn't notice this much roster churn, although it was significantly more than real life. As you say, it might take a real overhaul of minor league roster AI and is probably not going to happen.

I tried the "Run Computer Manager On All Teams", that didn't work either.
