SF Giants from 1987 on
I started following baseball in 1987, or at least that's the first year I remember. I was and still am a Giants fan.
For this league I started in 1901, importing real stats, and then using fairly conventional settings I simmed until the end of the 1986 season. At its conclusion I took over the Giants as GM only. Fictional players were not created, and I will keep it that way for the foreseeable future. OOTP player development drove players abilities, and players were drafted, signed, traded, and retired based on the simulation, not based on who they historically played for or how long their actual career lasted. In this thread I will GM the Giants but also take occasional looks at the Giants and MLB history in this alternate world. I don't plan to be a fast player, poster, or simmer, as my life and playing style dictate a slower pace. If anyone is curious about any of the historical stats in my world, or how any particular player did, I will be happy to share. And now on to take over the Giants...

Today the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention. Even though they beat the Reds 6-4, a win by the Braves ensured no postseason for the Giants. At 22.5 games back, the only team sporting a worse record in the NL West was the Astros.
The Giants do lay claim to 8 World Series titles, but only one since 1941, and that was '72. 1977 was the Giants last playoff appearance. The owner, Joe Romagnoli, has not been quiet about the fact that he wanted to win another title before he hands over the team. And at 82 years old, that time may come soon. He has owned the team for 27 years. And in that tenure he has only one title and 5 playoff appearances. Even though it was Edward Ralstons first year on the job as a GM, everyone expected it would be his last. The issue was now not would Ralstons be GM in 1987, but rather will Ralstons finish out the 1986 season.

The Giants finished the season with a 6-2 loss to the rival Dodgers. They stayed better than the Astros, but that's it in the NL West as they finished 70-92.
As soon as the clock struck midnight, on October 6th, Edward Ralstons was dismissed from his duty as GM and AMRO was hired in his stead. Though Ralstons was reassigned as Assistant GM and surprisingly accepted the position. AMRO, and unknown, must have had the ear of the owner, as he was not perceived to be one of the candidates for the replacement. And the fact that the dismissal and hiring came at the same time, made things all the more surprising. But as of Oct 6th, 1986 AMRO had taken over as the SF Giants GM. As the playoffs between Angels vs. Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves unfold, AMRO will be tasked with assessing his team, and trying to keep Romagnoli on his side. Over Romagnoli's 27 years he has earned the reputation as being a demanding owner who puts profit first, and meddles constantly. *As soon as I became the GM, I turned off Commissioner mode and made it so I can be fired*

It's AMRO's first day on the job and before AMRO can enter his office he is summoned into Romagnoli's. It's a brief, terse talk. Ragnoli outlines his goals, and sends AMRO off with the feeling that accepting this job may not have been such a wise choice.
AMRO finally sits down at this office and looks at the owners goals for the season: Winning record Score more runs Upgrade at catcher Romagnoli wants Toby Harrah to get an extension, but that doesn't have to happen until next year (1988) and by 1989 it is expected that the Giants have a power hitter, increase attendance by 7500 to 33,000, as well as make the playoffs. Romagnoli is able to hear AMRO's sigh from across the building. This isn't going to be easy. Time to briefly overview the current Giants Pitching Rick Reuschel is the ace of the staff, 37, and about to be a free agent. Eric Bell is the baby of the staff, at 22, and coming off a strong season at 8-7 with a 3.37 ERA The closer is Bradley Meagher and had 33 saves, impressive for a 70 win team, but is a free agent. Luis Aquino is a highly touted prospect at 22, and pitched two scoreless innings in his only major league appearance. Batting Luis Salazar, CF, is the star on offense playing a stellar CF, hitting for power, and signed through 1991. Dale Murphy, RF, has been strong (#2 in OPS for the NL) as well and is signed through 1988. The Giants top prospect is a 17 year old RF named Sammy Sosa who spent the year in the Northwest League, and, well, was awful. But the team is still very high on him, as this the rest of the league.
