OOTP 21 won't save

Hi, I can't seem to get my game to save when I try. I keep getting two error messages, and I have plenty of space on my computer. If anyone could help, I would appreciate it. I'm doing a daily simulation with 12 friends this year. Thank you!

The first message says:

DATABASE::save_database- could not save database files
OOTP tries to roll back the transaction

The second message says:

OOTP successfully restored the database files. Your database is NOT saved yet. Please check the disk space and the league folder, then try again.

I still haven't found one. I put in a trouble ticket and am waiting to hear back

Thanks. I am keeping a watch out for a reply. Otherwise I will have to try and fix it myself. LOL

I’m getting the same thing. I played yesterday and it was fine, now I’m getting the same messages as you guys. I’m guess I’m “happy” it’s just not me and my game. I’m sure they’ll get a patch quick... hopefully.

This generally happens when the game does not have proper permissions or space to save to the hard drive.

There are several potential reasons for this.

Probably the most likely is that you have an anti-virus or disk cleaner type of program that has either deleted some game files or is blocking the game when it tries to save. So to fix this, be sure to set an exception (whitelist) in your anti-virus programs for both the ootp21.exe and for any OOTP related folders, especially the folder OOTP uses for saving games.

Another potential source of the problem is not having proper write permissions for the game. The main fix for this would be to run the game in admin mode. Also, check the OOTP saves folder and make sure that is not read only or somehow write protected.

A third potential source of the problem is not having enough space on the hard drive you're trying to save to. Even if you think you have enough space, check to make sure OOTP is not saving to a smaller partitioned area of a hard drive that might be out of space (for instance, if you have your OS installed on a small partition, make sure OOTP didn't somehow get set to save to a folder on the partition, not your regular drive).

How would any of these setting have changed? What if none of these are the problem/solution, what else do we try?

If it's not one of the above, it's almost certainly something similar. The message comes if something is preventing the game from saving correctly to the spot on the hard drive it is set to save to.

So the trick to find out what it is that's interfering with the game and fix that.

The problem is extremely difficult for us to help you troubleshoot, because the issue is triggered by something external to the game, whether permission issues, lack of space or a third program. So basically it's a system specific problem, not an issue with the game itself.

As to how these settings could change, for instance you might download an update to the definitions for your anti-virus program, which wouldn't recognize the latest version of OOTP, and would treat it as a hostile program and block it writing to disk.

So even if it's not one of the specific things I mentioned in my first post, it's something similar. Could be Windows Defender, could be a disk cleaning program, something else like that.

One other thing you might try would be to see if you can change the game's data directory to a different location.

So go to 'settings' > 'expert' and find 'custom data path'. Change that to a folder in a different location on your system. Then restart the game and try again to see if that lets it save properly.

For the sake of argument then that would mean so far just the three of us have the same setting cause the game to have this problem. Also changing the file location did not help. DJock10 and bwasson what anti-virus are you using?

After going to setting > expert and changing my folder, I now receive the message error moving files to the auto save folder. The auto function could not move one or more .dat files to the auto save folder. WTF! Plus I have lost all my team logos!

It's some program or setting causing the issue. Could be the same one for each or you, could be totally different.

You'll need to reset the custom data location and try again, because something went wrong when you moved it.

To fix that, do the following:

1. Type the following into your Windows search function: %appdata%

2. Once that folder opens, navigate to the following folder: AppData\Roaming\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 21\config

3. There, you'll find the following files:

paths.cfg
favorite_paths.cfg
recent_paths.cfg

4. Delete all of these
5. Restart OOTP. It should run without the error now.

Then try moving the folder again. This time, make sure to copy the files and folders in your folder old location to the new location manually, like the logos or any saved games.

I'm also getting this error. I checked my anti virus program and it still is listing OOTP as an exception. Gonna try the other fixes tomorrow

Did this work for anyone?
