Pedro
For those of you criticizing Pedro for not pitching game 6....
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/ne...=.jsp&c_id=mlb NEW YORK -- Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez approached manager Grady Little on Tuesday night and made it clear that he was willing to pitch Game 6 on three days' rest to help his team stave off elimination at Yankee Stadium. As much as Little appreciated the offer, he declined and stuck with 38-year-old veteran John Burkett, who will be working on nine days of rest.

Not really that bad a decision for Little. Pedro has not been great in the playoffs, and short rests wouldn't help.

I never understood why they would have chosen Pedro for game 6. You would then have had Wakefield for game 7 if he's ready, but it was been made clear Little wanted to have him in relief. The argument goes that if you lose game 6 you're out, so thus you use your best pitcher on less rest, but I don't really understand this. His W or L is just as necessary in game 7 as game 6. The choice comes down to whether you want to use 3-days rest Timmy and 3-days rest Pedro, or full-rest Burkett and full-rest Pedro. As I think the stats for 3 days rest returners probably backs up (although I'm trusting in the broadcasters here ... ugh) the fact that the second choice is right.
Am I missing something here? Is there more too it? EDIT: Terribly written. |

Even with hindsight, I think Little made the right decision here.
