Better to build a good D team or building offensive machine?
I'm about to take my 2nd whirl in Gold and don't expect to do very well. (again) Finding a good hitting D shortstop without breaking the bank seems like a challenge.
Has anyone rolled with someone like Hanley at SS and his 37 rating In other words damn the D and try to win a bunch of 15-11 games? His O looks great compared to the Oz man and Tulo I've been trotting out there. My D seems pretty decent in the OF with Ichiro, Dwight Evans and well left could be a minefield with Albert Belle but not horrid. Panda is solid at 3B, Tulo and Oz at short are great D-no stick- Cano at 2B is good O and good D and Bags at first. Parrish at C with Kendall backing up. B Williams and Piazza platoon at DH Have Dave Parker and Klein in reserve Bobo, Gibson 95, RJ SE, Bert SE amd Plank SE rotation Pen is Donnelly, Bedrosian, Wilhelm , Sale, Percival, Radatz and Nathan closing. Run Hanely at SS and bring in Oz for D later innings?

defense is crucial at the upper levels, especially up the middle.

Probably won't do better than Oz Man did for me last year with a 18.5 ZR this past year. May steal me some games even though no stick

I prefer building the other way, solid D and slowly stir in more O.
But it is shooting your own foot, a little. The Big Bat Juggernaut is the way to go from a PP income perspective. |

I went with poor to horrible defense in Rookie, caring only about offense - and I made my parks boost offense as much as they could. But I was in no rush to advance, I really was looking more to save up PP at first. I waited a few seasons with all of my teams to buy any kind of pitching upgrades. I was going with lease/rental offensive Gold and Diamond cards exclusively, which tend to be terrible defensively. Guys like Baines for example.
Once I felt I had enough saved (was after 2 seasons for one team, 4 for the other 2 teams), I splurged and bought a pitching staff in the off-season and also switched to some better defensive guys at key positions. Works very well in the lower levels, so long as you're patient and don't mind a few .500ish seasons. Once you finally do spend and unleash your already strong offense paired with some good pitching you can really rack up wins and easily get promoted. Since Gold is the new Diamond in PT21, my experiences in 19 and 20 would say that to win there, defense is extremely important. You only want to consider skimping at spots like 1b and corner OF'ers, maybe 3b. This game will harshly punish you for having poor D in CF, SS and 2b. And I think to a lesser degree at C as well, that was much more pronounced in PT 19. For the highest levels, going all-out offense won't work against the whale types as they will beat you at your own game a lot. Pitching, defense, and a respectable offense is a better formula IMO in those stages. Someone like Hanley should be converted/trained to play 2b (which would still be dicey) or 3b, or at 6'2" even 1b. At low levels I could see playing him at SS if you can get the card for a good rental/lease price though. He'll pile up points there. Last edited by DonMattingly; 06-22-2020 at 12:39 PM. |
