1957 Red Sox
After several years away from actively and regularly OOTP'ing it, I decided it was time to jump back in. Using a random number generator to choose which Red Sox team I would take the helm of, I wound up with the 1957 iteration.
In reality, the '57 Sox went 82-72, finishing third in the American League behind the Yankees (98-56) and White Sox (90-64). Boston, led by Pinky Higgins as manager, was a pretty young team with 38-year-old Ted Williams being the lone guy over 30 in the starting lineup. The pitching staff was much the same, with 33-year-old Bob Porterfield being the only pitcher over 29 to appear in more than 11 games. The starting rotation featured three guys — Tom Brewer, Mike Fornieles, and Dave Sisler — in their age 25 season. Willard Nixon, 29, was the old man in the rotation. 1957 was an impressive season for Ted Williams. The 38-year-old Splendid Splinter hit an eye-popping .388 for the Red Sox, clubbing 38 home runs. Frank Malzone and Jackie Jensen drove in 103 runs each, with Jimmie Piersall scoring 103 times. I'll be serving in Challenge Mode as the General Manager of the Red Sox. In the game, the team owner isn't the famed Tom Yawkey, but rather a 56-year-old Australian penny-pincher named Phillip Reynolds. While his involvement is hands-off, he is demanding and has a priority of extreme winning. How will my OOTP version of the '57 Sox fare? There's only one way to tell. |

1957 Season Opener
Frank Sullivan was in midseason form on Opening Day, tossing a complete game shutout against the Orioles. Sullivan held Baltimore to four hits, issued no walks, and struck out three as he bested Billy Loes. The O’s right-hander worked 8 ⅔ innings, yielding two runs on six hits and no walks.
Red Sox leadoff hitter Jimmy Piersall was responsible for the game’s only scoring, hitting a two-run single off Loes in the top of the eighth inning. |

Red Sox narrowly avoid sweep at home
The Red Sox dropped two of three to open their first homestand of the 1957 season — and it's against the hated New York Yankees.

I'm making them as I go. I wanted it to be something other than a block of text or screen grabs. I've pulled some digital copies of 1957 newspapers and cleared out some article columns to put in my own articles. Made a simple faux Red Sox letterhead with the appropriate logo of the time period, and found a notebook image and I'm filling it in as needed.

Maybe your Australian owner will let you sign a few black players whereas Southern gentleman Tom Yawkey was the last MLB owner to the party in that regards.

I can only imagine what it would've been like for the Red Sox to have Willie Mays in the same outfield as Ted Williams and later Carl Yastrzemski. |
