Strategy for substitutions
Does anyone have a good strategy to not only keep your starters fresh, but to make sure bench players are keeping sharp while putting the best player on the field?

The obvious is to set up your lineups so your bench players get a start right as your starter is about to be fatigued.
I use my bench a lot so I don't know, but I don't think players get rusty being on the bench even if they don't play much. I like my bench players to play and try to use them in the situations that are most advantageous. So, a left-handed bench player will get their starts vs right-handed pitchers. My excellent defensive backup short stop will start when my low strike out, ground ball starting pitcher starts. |

Aside from setting up obvious platoon splits, you can't really accomplish "putting the best player on the field" while still "keeping your starters fresh".
Pick your ideal starting lineup. Then designate the bench guys to start "every x days". Note that it doesn't always work exactly as you'd expect when you have a bench guy covering more than one spot. (Like say you are only carrying 4 OF and you designate the 4th guy to play the respective positions every 5th, 6th, 7th day - it doesn't work as well as you'd hope it would. You have to keep an eye on things...) |

There is no game mechanic for freshness of bench players. So it doesn't matter if they ever get game time.
Only time I would use a bench player is too rest a starter or if it's a platoon split thing. If not they ride the bench all year |

Instead allow users to set playing time percentages. That seems more realistic |

Unlike relievers who I bring into a game, nothing indicates how tired my everyday starters are. If I wait for the computer to tell me, I usually have all my bench guys needing to get in on the same day, which is pretty much throwing that game away as the computer teams don't seem to run into that problem.
