Trying to make sense of pitching changes

9th inning, my RP is not doing well and I'm losing big time. Manager goes out to ask for another RP...and ends up putting on the mound 2 position players even though I still have 96 Carlton ready to go.

Why did it happen ? Even though Carlton is labelled as a closer, his secondary role is MR and he hasn't thrown an inning in the season yet. Is it a bug or should I just use MR for all pitchers ?

Thanks!

it's not a bug, the AI is just looking out for you. Putting your closer in a game that is already lost just wastes him. You want him rested for higher leverage situations tomorrow and the day after.

You're probably right chazzy, but...position players? What kind of teams have done that in the past 20 years ?

ESPN article from way back in 2018:
So far, 43 different position players have accounted for 54 pitching appearances this season. That's the most position players to appear as pitchers in the expansion era, which is since 1961.

If this is the year of the position pitcher, July 23 could be the official day of celebration. On that day alone, four position players pitched: Carlos Tocci and Ryan Rua for the Texas Rangers, and Anthony Rizzo and Víctor Caratini for the Chicago Cubs. That's the most position players to pitch on the same day in the expansion era, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Thank you, I stand corrected.
