RIP Jerry Sloan
I'm a lifelong Lakers fan but always admired Jerry Sloan from afar. Wasn't afraid to bench stars if they were having an off night and always developed his younger players. Never scared to mix it up with refs and get thrown out of a game like a fiery baseball manager
. Such an old school coach, he reminded me more of a college coach than an NBA coach because he was substance over style every time.

He was a great coach. He deserved better than how we was driven out of Utah. I always wondered why he never accepted another position but I think by 2010 he was burnt out and by the time he was ready to return his health had declined and by 2016 we knew he had dementia and other serious issues.

His were the Bulls I always think of, not despicable Jordan.
Sloan and Van Lier at the guards, Bob 'Butterbean' Love and Chet 'The Jet' Walker at the forwards made for a very good team. For the ten minutes per game Tom Boerwinkle was on the court, they were excellent. While not a Chicago fan, I always wanted them to get past the disgusting Lakers. But they never did.

That team also had Nate Thurmond with aging knees and Wilbur Holland. They broke my heart in 1975, up 3-2 in the conference finals vs. Golden State and they lost first at home and then in Oakland. That was that team's last, best chance.
The other thing I think of with Jerry is when he coached the Bulls, from 79 to 82. I would listen when the Bulls were playing the Celtics and the late Johnny Most on WBZ out of Boston, he would RIP Sloan for employing "military tactics" - thought the team was dirty, etc. I guess they didn't go to dinner after games. ![]() Anyway, R.I.P t an everyman who did very well. |
