Logo Creation

Question for all you talented artists and modders out there. How do you go about making custom logos? I'm looking for advice on how to start. What software/programs do you use?

I'm not nearly as talented as some of the folks making logos on here but I use Paint, GIMP, and Inkscape Many use Photoshop

Paint Shop Pro works well. Just to clarify TrbldWiseman's post, Paint.net, not the Paint included with Windows. Justafan has excellent programs for creating logos, caps and jerseys. These are great for newbies and vets alike.

I started with GIMP. Its free, good, and, fairly intuitive, imo.

Thanks for the replies!
Follow up question: What is the process you guys go through when creating a logo? Do you start from scratch or combine bits and pieces of pre-existing logos?

Logo templates have been posted in the past but may have dead links. Since I have little creativity but I know paint Shop Pro well I borrow ideas from others. I try to recreate what they have done. I learn from the masters. Check out the posts stickied above. Make what you like. Some like circular logos others detest them. Low and txranger make excellent logos. rocknfire7, justafan and gern44 have also made templates.
