Tiebreaker - how would it handle this?
Hi all, I have a tiebreaker question as to how OOTP 20 would handle a situation. I know that it didn’t work quite well in previous versions and wonder what the new tiebreaker code would do.
12 team league, top 4 make playoffs. With 6 to play, 2 games separated 2nd from 6th. 2nd led 3rd by 1 and a 3-way tie for 4th was a second game back. With 3 to play, same 2 game separation, but a four-way tie developed for 3rd. After simulating the next day, it developed into a tie for 2nd and then a regular ‘ol 3-way tie for 4th. How would the game handle this 3-way tie? Similar to MLB with two days of tiebreakers? What would happen if four teams tied for two “wild card” spots for the 3rd and 4th seeds? It’s definitely still possible since 4th is only a game back of the tie for 2nd and 3rd. There was a point tonight in the sim for the 2nd-to-last night where I could have had a 5-way tie for 3 spots which would make the final day really interesting. Thanks! |

I don't know the answer, but I know what I'd do if I didn't want to wait for one...
1. Make a few backups of your game. 2. From a backup, engineer the results for one of the scenarios and see how OOTP handles it. By engineer, I mean that you would monkey with the results by - for examples - starting the worst pitchers and batters for the team(s) you want to lose in order to ensure the ties. 3. Advance past the final day of the season and see what OOTP did with tiebreaker games, etc. 4. Repeat as many times as necessary with the other backups in order to see what OOTP does with other scenarios. |

Also maybe noteworthy...
1) OOTP has a somewhat new (not sure when it was first introduced - if it is OOTP 20 or not...) feature that allows you to Reset League to Regular Season Mode. I haven't really messed with this, but it's described as "... in case you want to manually schedule tie-breaking games using the schedule editor." Your scenario would seem to be exactly why this feature exists. 2) In my games, if I have the potential for any ties on the final day of the regular season, I always complete those games without advancing to the next day. This keeps OOTP from scheduling tiebreaker games (if needed) or postseason games. Normally, this is just so I can manually schedule a best-of-three instead of a one-gamer, but also comes handy in those rare instances of a three-or-more team tie, and I want to specify the tiebreaking procedure, rather than go with what OOTP does (or if I need to schedule one or more makeup games)... In your case, you might make a backup after the games of the last day of the regular season are complete, but before you've advanced to the next day. That way, once you do advance, if you don't like what OOTP did w tiebreakers, you can go back to the backup copy and proceed with #2 above... |

Thank you! The reset league feature would have been the best scenario especially if I found myself in a tiebreak for the 2nd seed, which is a home field seed. I actually didn’t need it as there were (of course) no tiebreaks needed.
What I have now is my team in 1st playing the team in 4th for potentially 10 consecutive games. (Played them on the road for 3 and now in a 7-game semifinal) This made me really consider how to break complicated tiebreaker scenarios, especially since I have a European soccer style, one division system. A five-team tournament would have been interesting to schedule for a tiebreaker. |
