Six runs, none earned?

I just noticed something while looking over MLB game stats with my Royals franchise. I looked at a Giants game where Cueto started the 2nd Giants game of the season. He was yanked in the 1st inning as he gave up 6 runs on 6 hits and never recorded an out. But his ERA is 0.00!

How is this possible?

Thanks.

If batters reached on an error, you would try to guess how many runs would have scored if those errors would have been outs instead.

So if your defense bottles and lets say the first 3 batters reach on errors, you will never give an earned run no matter how many runs you will give up this inning, because the inning should have been over after those 3 batters. Anything else isn't "earned" against the pitcher, but only scored because errors made the inning continue longer than "earned".

Let's say the inning goes reached on error, hit, 3 run shot, reached on error, RBI triple , RBI groundout, strikeout, strikeout.

So 5 runs score, how many are earned?

The first isnt earned, because the batter should have been out.
The 2nd and 3rd would have still happened without an error, so those are earned.
The 4th batter also reached on an error, so unearned.
The 5th guy reached on a triple and scored on a groundout. Those should been earned. However, the last groundout would have ended the inning, so also unearned.

5 runs, 2 earned.

Were there any errors? If the team committed errors then sometimes the runs scored after the error are all counted as unearned runs.

If he never recorded an out then isn't the zero there just in place of an infinity sign? He has zero innings pitched, right? You sure the game is seeing them as unearned?

Good point, if he pitches the next game his ERA will be in the double digits.

His ERA is actually infinity, but I don't believe the game supports the symbol for infinity. In place of that 0.00 is used. Once he records an out you'll see an actual (very high) ERA.

Hey! Thanks for all of your responses. I just looked at the box score and the Giants had one error. So I will see what happens in his next start and let you know.

You can look and see how many earned runs he was charged with
