I love these meddling owners!
I'm enjoying this a lot in OOTP21. I have an owner who has an "Interfering" rating for Involvement.
Every year, this wannabe Steinbrenner goes and signs players to extensions behind my back. It really adds a lot of personality to the game. I'm betting some people hate this, but not me.

Yep, you do get mails. Looks like my owner just signed Clemens to a one year extension.
A few years back, I was going to let Dante Bichette walk - but my owner liked him and I suddenly found him signed to a three year extension. Last year I wanted to sign Will Clark to an extension, and I went to do so, but my owner already had. It's possible it may happen too often - I have seen the owner do this more than once a season. But it does add a lot of personality to the owner.

I like that this CAN happen but I also like that I can edit my owner to not do this stuff in leagues where I don’t want it.

But at the same time, it certainly adds another challenge. And the fact that basically no matter what they say or tell you to do, if you can deliver a championship and do it while making them a ton of money, they're pretty forgiving of the other pieces they requested of you. |

There are definitely playstyles or certain goals you might have during a sim where you wouldn't want this.
I tend to play high level (several seasons in a day, not a lot of in-game stuff). I just did a 20-year sim for my cousin to see what might have happened if Damon Berryhill was just never removed from the Cubs lineup until he retired. Damon was his favorite as a kid. Thankfully, the owner didn't ask me to trade or release Damon! ![]() I ended putting 1.9GB of HTML up online from my silly Damon Berryhill sim.

How often do real owners sign players themselves in real life?

That's essentially Scott Boras' game. He goes right to ownership and sells them on his players. I guarantee you the Padres front office didn't want to sign Eric Hosmer but Boras appealed to ownership and laughed all the way to the bank

Signing players like this was the heart of George Steinbrenner's deal as owner.

Listen, we really think signing Machado would be a waste of money as he's only 26 and we can't swing a 10 year deal for him, despite having a giant gaping hole at third base. However, we can trade Kelenic and Dunn for 36 year old Cano, despite having a player making league min who just hit .330 for us, if we get them to eat Swarzak and Bruce.
Oh, and put that McNeil kid in the trade Cano is a Hall of Famer. He can play Second Base for us.

I'm pretty sure when Sandy Alderson was around they signed an FA or extended someone he had expressly said he didn't want, sorry I don't remember who now. And man, I'm playing a season in 21 and NOBODY will touch Cano, he's worse than Barry Zito used to be for the Giants. In my latest season I got Rougned Odor in a salary dump from TEX and started playing him, he's an upgrade but now I have $20M spent on a designated hitter in the NL. Sigh.
