1998 Top 100 Prospects
Selby Spotts is the top prospect this year, having been drafted first overall last year. His stuff is coming along nicely but his control will always be lacking. John Land has made the transition to shortstop in the Red Sox minor league system and should move quickly now. |

1998 College Playoffs
The Arizona Wildcats are nearly a perfect .500 after 99 years - the team has a 2477-2473 record. They've now won two National Titles with the first coming in 1966. There are still 24 teams that have yet to win, with Santa Clara the best of that group. The Broncos have actually been to the playoffs more than any other team (57 times) but no championship.

1998 MLB Draft
A familiar high school pitcher -- Juan Carlos Di Napoli -- was drafted first overall by the Devil Rays. He won the Justin Zygmunt Award in the NCHSAA three out of four years and finished 3rd the other. He also twice finished second in the Lester Taylor MVP voting. Connor Greenwald was the first hitter taken, a college outfielder with a great eye. |

1998 Hall of Fame
Mario Herrera, 3B Herrera has a strange Hall of Fame case. He only went to one all-star game, but yet his overall value ranks up there with Aidan Rice and Jody Davison. He wasn't a "compiler" either, having a mostly normal career length, taking over the starting job at age 20 and moving into a backup role at age 34. He was just so consistent with 2-5 WAR every year. He also had great baserunning value, leading the league in stolen bases in both 1985 and 1986. He ranks second all-time in third basemen for stolen bases, just behind Alonso Carvajal who played in the days of huge stolen base numbers of the early 1900s. Initial Acquisition: Signed in 1977 with the Yankees out of Venezuela MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 1, All-Star Appearances - 1, World Series Championships - 0, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 11346 PA, 2850 H, 89 HR, 610 SB, 0.33 wOBA, 108 wRC+, -14.4 ZR, 53.7 WAR, 44.8 JAWS Will Fonseca, 3B Fonseca actually had more awards at third base than Herrera, but most of those came over the span of just a couple of years. The early parts of his career were only about average value, keeping him just out of the Hall. Initial Acquisition: Number 8 overall pick by the Athletics out of Limestone MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 2, All-Star Appearances - 2, World Series Championships - 1, Playoff MVPs - 2 Career Stats: 9359 PA, 2251 H, 256 HR, 7 SB, 0.337 wOBA, 112 wRC+, -24.4 ZR, 42.6 WAR, 35.8 JAWS Holden Hare, CF Initial Acquisition: Number 12 overall pick by the Expos out of El Capitan MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 2, All-Star Appearances - 2, World Series Championships - 0, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 9652 PA, 2156 H, 271 HR, 256 SB, 0.315 wOBA, 102 wRC+, -10.7 ZR, 38.3 WAR, 33.9 JAWS Zach Reynolds, LF Initial Acquisition: Number 74 overall pick by the Cubs out of North Buncombe MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 0, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 2, World Series Championships - 2, Playoff MVPs - 0 Career Stats: 7134 PA, 1913 H, 114 HR, 419 SB, 0.334 wOBA, 114 wRC+, 4.2 ZR, 37.9 WAR, 33.7 JAWS Al Ireland, 1B Initial Acquisition: Number 41 overall pick by the Orioles out of Houston MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, Timo Fernandez Rookie of the Year Award - 0, Youssef Raadouni Gold Glove Awards - 4, Paul Vines Slugging Awards - 0, All-Star Appearances - 3, World Series Championships - 2, Playoff MVPs - 3 Career Stats: 6873 PA, 1966 H, 62 HR, 234 SB, 0.337 wOBA, 113 wRC+, 95.9 ZR, 35.2 WAR, 31.8 JAWS Cyrus Jolly, RHP Initial Acquisition: Number 64 overall pick by the Angels out of Pepperdine MLB Awards: Tomas Reed MVP Awards - 0, J.P. 1999 Top 100 Prospects
Arnie Mendez is the number one prospect. Who is he? A 1995 scouting discovery by the Rockies with oodles of power potential, speed, and center field defense. Oh and he's durable, highly adaptable, incredibly smart, and not greedy at all. Grayson Brantley is the top pitching prospect in this last year of the millennium. He's in AAA but still needs his changeup to improve a bit or else he'll be stuck in the bullpen. |
